Do you underestimate confidence and enthusiasm? I realize these are two entirely separate things, but they do go hand in hand in your business and can seriously impact your progress and the success you’ll see in the long run.

Let’s define each of these first – so we’re on the same page in terms of what I’m talking about. Then I’ll go into how they affect your business and what you can do to leverage each characteristic for your benefit.

Is it possible that you underestimate the value of confidence and

Let's define each of these first so we're on the same

Then I'll go into how they affect your business and what

you can do to leverage each characteristic to your benefit.

Let's start with confidence.

Speaker:

Confidence means feeling sure of yourself and your abilities,

Speaker:

not in an arrogant way,

Speaker:

but in a realistic,

Speaker:

secure way.

Speaker:

It's not about feeling superior to others.

Speaker:

Rather, it's a solid,

Speaker:

peaceful, inner knowledge and understanding of who you are and what

Speaker:

you're capable of.

Speaker:

When we move over to enthusiasm,

Speaker:

this revolves around two words,

Speaker:

excitement and interest.

Speaker:

The level of enthusiasm one has is based on how they

Speaker:

portray these characteristics and to what degree having strong but appropriate

Speaker:

levels of confidence and enthusiasm play a part in many areas

Speaker:

of your business.

Speaker:

Really, they affect all aspects in one way or another,

Speaker:

but showing confidence and enthusiasm can make you feel vulnerable.

Speaker:

What if people don't see your vision the same way as

Speaker:

you do?

Speaker:

What if they don't agree?

Speaker:

What if they already judge you and don't think you can

Speaker:

accomplish what you've set out to do?

Speaker:

It's questions like this that we ask ourself that make us

Speaker:

play small.

Speaker:

They bring down the level of confidence or enthusiasm that we

Speaker:

really feel and are willing to show the world and they

Speaker:

like a self-fulfilling prophecy can walk us right into that result,

Speaker:

not achieving what we set out to do.

Speaker:

I see this play out a lot in the handmade product

Speaker:

industry, and my hope here is by identifying and acknowledging it,

Speaker:

we can turn the dial up on these two traits,

Speaker:

and in turn,

Speaker:

you can see things move forward in your business.

Speaker:

If you already rank high on confidence and enthusiasm,

Speaker:

it's okay to stop this episode right here and move on

Speaker:

to another one of interest that will serve you more.

Speaker:

But if you recognize in yourself just by the little bit

Speaker:

that I've already said up to this point that your confidence

Speaker:

or enthusiasm could use a boost,

Speaker:

listen on when considering confidence,

Speaker:

I see makers highly confident in product creation.

Speaker:

After all,

Speaker:

you've identified the materials that are the quality you desire.

Speaker:

You have the actual art of making meaning the creativity and

Speaker:

skills or have acquired the necessary training.

Speaker:

You've perfected your production methods,

Speaker:

including equipment,

Speaker:

proportions, timing,

Speaker:

and any special touches that make your products uniquely yours.

Speaker:

This is not a problem where confidence lags comes in two

Speaker:

other places.

Speaker:

First, the business side of things.

Speaker:

Until you decided to turn your making into a business,

Speaker:

you never had to consider it before.

Speaker:

Perhaps you've never had business experience or are thinking you should

Speaker:

have paid more attention in some of your classes at school,

Speaker:

so you're confident in knowing what to do is lower.

Speaker:

I have great news for you here.

Speaker:

Many, and I mean many a maker started their business feeling

Speaker:

the same way.

Speaker:

If you've been listening to the podcast for a while,

Speaker:

you've heard lots of business business owners who admit they didn't

Speaker:

know about certain things or did things wrong in the beginning,

Speaker:

but they did it anyway.

Speaker:

They started with what they knew and went from there to

Speaker:

learn and adjust,

Speaker:

and today have very successful businesses.

Speaker:

What they didn't do is let their lack of confidence in

Speaker:

business knowledge stop them from trying,

Speaker:

and today with all the information and resources available,

Speaker:

help is immediately at your fingertips.

Speaker:

Reach out and take it if there's a part of your

Speaker:

business that you think can be improved,

Speaker:

and by all means,

Speaker:

don't let a lower confidence level here prevent you from pursuing

Speaker:

your dream.

Speaker:

The second place low confidence can affect your business is in

Speaker:

the marketing and selling of your products.

Speaker:

When you first started making your product as a hobby,

Speaker:

you created for your own satisfaction and fulfillment.

Speaker:

Even when you give things as gifts,

Speaker:

there's no judgment from the recipient.

Speaker:

You most likely receive a thank you and probably also praise

Speaker:

for your gift comments about how talented you are,

Speaker:

the quality of your creations,

Speaker:

and on and on.

Speaker:

All that changes when you start promoting your products and hoping

Speaker:

for sales.

Speaker:

By nature of a buyer seller relationship,

Speaker:

you present your products and the other person decides whether they

Speaker:

want it or not.

Speaker:

That's enough to make anyone second guess themselves.

Speaker:

We're human.

Speaker:

We don't like rejection,

Speaker:

but it's part of what you accept when you're in business,

Speaker:

and honestly,

Speaker:

if you think of your own behavior,

Speaker:

you'll recognize that you do this to others too.

Speaker:

You choose one jewelry style over another or certain lotions over

Speaker:

others due to their ingredients.

Speaker:

It's not that the ones that you don't buy are inferior,

Speaker:

it's just that they're not your choice.

Speaker:

As business owners,

Speaker:

we must always keep in mind that there's a portion of

Speaker:

the population who want our products.

Speaker:

Not everybody.

Speaker:

These are your ideal customers,

Speaker:

right? Our lack of confidence comes into play when we start

Speaker:

thinking that nobody will want our products,

Speaker:

and if you let this get to you,

Speaker:

it affects every aspect of how you run your business.

Speaker:

In my start with Confidence program,

Speaker:

the whole goal is to validate that you have a product

Speaker:

that people will want to buy.

Speaker:

In some cases,

Speaker:

tweaks need to be made to get it to the point

Speaker:

where it's ready for the market,

Speaker:

but once you've done your validation,

Speaker:

that means there is a market out there for you.

Speaker:

It's then up to you to find that market and show

Speaker:

up consistently with good messaging that leads your perfect customer to

Speaker:

the sale.

Speaker:

Without confidence,

Speaker:

you may shy away from trying new things to get you

Speaker:

the visibility that you need to bring in those sales you

Speaker:

desperately want,

Speaker:

and that's a perfect segue into enthusiasm.

Speaker:

I mentioned earlier that enthusiasm is gauged by excitement and interest.

Speaker:

You display this to a high or low degree every time

Speaker:

you talk about your business,

Speaker:

attend a networking meeting or exhibit at a show.

Speaker:

If you describe your business in a timid,

Speaker:

almost apologetic way,

Speaker:

how interested do you think someone is to want to know

Speaker:

more, much less to buy?

Speaker:

Test yourself right now.

Speaker:

If I met you and asked you about your business,

Speaker:

how would you respond?

Speaker:

Would you proudly speak about what you do and how your

Speaker:

products benefit your customers?

Speaker:

Or would you stumble over your words and in a soft

Speaker:

voice, kind of get out a string of words about what

Speaker:

you do?

Speaker:

If this last response rings true for you?

Speaker:

There's immediate work to do.

Speaker:

This is your assignment for today.

Speaker:

Script out the exact words you'll use.

Speaker:

Anytime you're in a situation where people ask you what you

Speaker:

do, then practice it over and over again until it becomes

Speaker:

second nature.

Speaker:

Not only should you excitedly talk with your booth customers,

there are limits too,

right? There is such a thing as going too far with

enthusiasm and becoming overwhelming or overbearing,

which makes people run the other way,

but you also do the same thing if you don't show

Speaker:

any interest in helping people as they look at your products.

You need to use your intuition to find the right balance

Speaker:

overall. You have a unique opportunity as a maker to bond

Speaker:

with your customers every time you interact with them on the

Speaker:

phone, in social media,

Speaker:

at personal events,

Speaker:

and the very best at craft shows and farmer's markets.

Speaker:

How you confidently present yourself and how enthusiastically you talk with

Speaker:

them means everything.

Speaker:
