Instagram can be a powerhouse of connection and traffic for your business. But if it just feels too complicated, today’s episode is for you. We’re breaking down the basics of Instagram for beginners so you can finally get started with this key social platform.

Today, we are joined by Allison Scholes. And you’re going to love the name of her company – are you ready? Boss Lady in Sweatpants. So perfect, right?

Allison helps mompreneurs build their Instagram presence through coaching, creative copy, and content. On her podcast called Social Media for Mompreneurs she guides busy moms on how to build their brand online in just minutes a day. Even when those minutes are super hard to come by.

Instagram for Beginners

  • Remember – Instagram is not a sales platform. It’s a connection platform. <– tune in for the full discussion on this.
  • Write your Instagram bio around your ideal audience. It should have three important parts:
    • who you serve
    • what is their main problem
    • and what is your solution
  • Focus on a specific objective or goal for the next 60 to 90 days so your content can be very concrete. Build know like and trust.
  • Build brand awareness so you can expand your audience.
  • Create content categories (aka post types). Try:
    • lifestyle posts
    • behind the scenes
    • tips and tutorials.
    • show your process (people can relate with you when they see that)
    • use photos of your product as backgrounds behind quotes
  • Map out your content monthly and weekly. Plan and schedule your content a week before so all you need the following week is to engage and be fully present on Instagram. <– Tune in for details on how to create your schedule!
  • Forget what gurus say about how often to post. Do what works for you and feels good.
  • Show up on Instagram in a way that feels right and aligned with your business and your brand.
  • Start with one feature on Instagram (feed, stories, IGTV, or reels) because if you’re not consistent with that, there’s no way you’re going to be consistent doing all the features on Instagram. Once you feel comfortable and consistent with one thing, then add another.
  • Focus on quality followers rather than quantity.
  • Pay attention to which post gave you the most reach or engagement in the last 30 days. You can repurpose it into something new.
  • Creating shareable content is a really great way to grow your account. They can be carousels, tips, tutorials, and infographics that people share and save.
  • The best way to make connections on Instagram is to show your face. Don’t hide behind your brand.
  • Respond back to people engaging with your post to keep the conversations going.

Yeah. So you know that I'm an Instagram coach and I

know so many women,

especially entrepreneurs and product based businesses,

they spin their wheels on Instagram,

how to grow their business and their brand.

So a lot of people,

when they work with me,

Speaker:

they will learn that I am a huge Marvel fan,

more like a Marvel and my favorite character.

Speaker:

My favorite villain character is low-key hands down my all time

Speaker:

favorite. So I always say,

you can love Loki in the movies cause he's a trickster.

Speaker:

He manipulates,

Speaker:

he copies,

Speaker:

but you can't be like,

Speaker:

low-key on Instagram.

Speaker:

If you want to grow your brand,

Speaker:

you have to be your authentic self.

Speaker:

So don't try to improvise.

Speaker:

Don't create something that you want your image to be.

Speaker:

Don't try to anticipate that you'll attract more followers by being

Speaker:

a certain way,

Speaker:

just get on and be who you are.

Speaker:

Is that what you mean?

Speaker:

Yes, absolutely.

Speaker:

Because Loki is known to mimic other people and transform,

Speaker:

and we can't do that on Instagram.

Speaker:

If we really,

Speaker:

really want to make those connections and grow our business Well,

Speaker:

and I think a lot of people do,

Speaker:

they get freaked out about social media overall,

Speaker:

because it's going out to who knows who you know,

Speaker:

is going to see it.

Speaker:

And so you try to say,

Speaker:

okay, how do I position myself in the best light to

Speaker:

the people that I want to attract?

Speaker:

And then what you're saying is the more disingenuous you become,

Speaker:

you're actually going against what you're trying to create in the

Speaker:

first place,

Speaker:

which is a community.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

And here's the things too.

Speaker:

We all start off that way when we're on a new

Speaker:

social media platform.

Speaker:

So when we take Instagram,

Speaker:

for instance,

Speaker:

what happens is we are watching other people that are very

Speaker:

similar to our niche or what we do in the world.

Speaker:

So we will fall into that trap of consuming so much

Speaker:

content, right?

Speaker:

And we look at these people and go,

Speaker:

oh, they're successful.

Speaker:

So maybe that's exactly how I need to show up.

Speaker:

And at the end of the day,

Speaker:

it's really not going to work for you.

Speaker:

You really need to get crystal clear on why you're on

Speaker:

Instagram or any social media platform in the first place,

Speaker:

and really just get in tune with your own brand and

Speaker:

the way you want to show up in your own authenticity,

Speaker:

it'll show up better online on your social media platforms when

Speaker:

you do it that way.

Speaker:

That's interesting.

Speaker:

And we're definitely going to dive more into that.

I have to tell you Alison,

Speaker:

that as I was thinking of,

Speaker:

well, what topics do I want to cover?

Speaker:

What questions do I want to ask based on where your

Speaker:

expertise is?

Speaker:

And all I just was thinking to myself,

Speaker:

if we had done this interview last week,

Speaker:

you would probably be saying something different than you're even going

Speaker:

to say this week because things keep changing so fast.

Speaker:

Yes. Share With me first,

Speaker:

how you decided that Instagram well,

Speaker:

social media overall,

Speaker:

but specifically Instagram,

Speaker:

how that was going to be your platform,

Speaker:

the focus.

Speaker:

So in the beginning years ago,

Speaker:

I always knew that I wanted to build a business.

Speaker:

I never liked the idea of working a nine to five.

Speaker:

I knew that kids were going to be in my life

Speaker:

and they are,

Speaker:

and I really wanted to be that fully present mom.

Speaker:

And so I wanted to a business.

Speaker:

And in the beginning I actually started with a product based

Speaker:

business where I was actually selling personalized Disney autograph books through

Speaker:

Etsy. That is how I started my journey.

Speaker:

And so I wanted to get the word out and I

Speaker:

started using Instagram.

Speaker:

And as I kind of went through that,

Speaker:

I was discovering that just blasting pictures of my products on

Speaker:

Instagram was not working.

Speaker:

So as the years unfolded,

Speaker:

I actually didn't want to do the autograph books anymore.

Speaker:

I really wanted to get into blogging.

Speaker:

And that is how boss,

Speaker:

lady and sweat pants came about,

Speaker:

where I wanted to have a blog.

Speaker:

And I really thought in the beginning it was going to

Speaker:

be a mom blog of raising kids,

Speaker:

how to build a business,

Speaker:

but it really just fell into the social media space because

Speaker:

I was on social media,

Speaker:

trying to figure it out for myself,

Speaker:

falling into Instagram,

Speaker:

just learning everything I could about Instagram,

Speaker:

following the gurus,

Speaker:

taking all the classes.

Speaker:

And that is just really how I honed in to the

Speaker:

Instagram's space and really figuring out how I could use this

Speaker:

tool, this marketing tool to build my brand and how I

Speaker:

can stand out.

Speaker:

Even though there are so many other people that do the

Speaker:

same thing I do.

Speaker:

I knew that there was space for me and I allowed

Speaker:

myself to take the time and to really hone in into

Speaker:

my brand and what I wanted to stand for and then

Speaker:

figure out how I'm going to put it out there on

Speaker:

Instagram. I love it.

Speaker:

And I love that explanation as well because with people who

Speaker:

are listening here,

Speaker:

you guys are going to agree with me that there are

Speaker:

other people who make pampering products like sugar scrubs or lotions

Speaker:

or jewelry.

Speaker:

And so just like you're saying with social media,

Speaker:

there are other people doing Instagram,

Speaker:

but they're not doing it the way you do it.

Speaker:

I think that's kind of circles back to this whole idea

Speaker:

of individuality on the social media platforms too,

Speaker:

because there are other people who are creating the products that

Speaker:

we all make.

Speaker:

And the only way we can be different and stand out

Speaker:

is to show our personality.

Speaker:

Yes, our products might have some unique qualities too,

Speaker:

but that personality overlay is the only thing that people absolutely

Speaker:

positively can't mimic.

Speaker:

Absolutely. And We've talked about this before here.

Speaker:

Alison is,

Speaker:

and we've talked video and all of that,

Speaker:

and I think people understand it,

Speaker:

but actually getting to the point where they're applying,

Speaker:

it seems to be the challenge.

Speaker:

And I also know that a lot of people spend so

Speaker:

much time and just feel like they aren't getting anywhere with

Speaker:

the platform.

Speaker:

So let's talk through some of this if we can.

Speaker:

And I'm not sure if we want to start right in

Speaker:

the beginning about Instagram or where we should start,

Speaker:

but I'd really like to tackle this question and I'm not

Speaker:

talking about having something go viral or like any of that

Speaker:

stuff. I'm just talking about steadily,

Speaker:

building an audience with the right people coming in.

Speaker:

Maybe you can give us some tips or something about how

Speaker:

to do that,

Speaker:

but where do you think we should start with this conversation?

Speaker:

I get the same question all the time.

Speaker:

Sue, and it's hard to just give one answer for so

Speaker:

many different people.

Speaker:

I would ask your audience,

Speaker:

why are you on Instagram in the first place?

Speaker:

So first we need to identify your Instagram objective.

Speaker:

Maybe your Instagram objective is to build brand awareness or maybe

Speaker:

it's to build community.

Speaker:

Maybe you want to drive traffic to your website.

Speaker:

Maybe it's an Etsy store or an Amazon store,

Speaker:

or maybe you want to grow your email list.

Speaker:

I want to ask you a question.

Speaker:

I think the obvious first answer for everybody is going to

Speaker:

be well,

Speaker:

it's a way for me to get more sales.

Speaker:

And I think this may be where the whole problem starts

Speaker:

because you're jumping from not knowing somebody to thinking one post

Speaker:

would convert to a sale.

Speaker:

And what you were just saying here,

Speaker:

in terms of your demonstration of different goals that we can

Speaker:

have is it's not always necessarily selling it's a step towards

Speaker:

the sale.

Speaker:

Would you agree?

Speaker:

Yeah. So let me put it this way.

Speaker:

Instagram is not a sales platform.

Speaker:

Instagram is a connection platform.

Speaker:

So your Etsy store,

Speaker:

your Amazon store,

Speaker:

that is your sales.

Speaker:

We have to make a shift in our mind.

Speaker:

We have to make a mindset shift that we cannot approach

Speaker:

Instagram in a way to sell something.

Speaker:

We have to approach Instagram in a way to help and

Speaker:

serve people.

Speaker:

When we make that mindset shift,

Speaker:

that is when you will grow your brand,

Speaker:

your presence on Instagram,

Speaker:

it's not about selling.

Speaker:

Selling comes later.

Speaker:

Selling comes naturally.

Speaker:

It's all about connections.

Speaker:

First. It's all about serving and helping.

Speaker:

Even though We can sell from certain posts,

Speaker:

you can tag a post and Sal,

Speaker:

are you saying that should not ever be your primary purpose

Speaker:

overall for your whole account?

Speaker:

It might be for a particular post,

Speaker:

but overall for the account,

Speaker:

it should not be right.

Speaker:

Yes. So then let me see if I can remember the

Speaker:

types of strategies and reasons why you would be on Instagram

Speaker:

that you had mentioned.

Speaker:

So you may want to grow your list.

Speaker:

You might want to get people to know you,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

discovery. I've always thought of Instagram as a place for discovery

Speaker:

for people and then deepening a relationship,

Speaker:

right? And then getting over to those sales platforms at some

Speaker:

point, would you pick only one of these or a couple

Speaker:

of these?

Speaker:

Because I feel like all of these are important for a

Speaker:

business. They Are all important.

Speaker:

But what happens is when we try to do all of

Speaker:

those at one time,

Speaker:

and we are just blasting different types of posts,

Speaker:

you actually end up confusing your audience.

Speaker:

That's what happens.

Speaker:

So I always recommend that you focus on a specific objective

Speaker:

or goal for the next 60 to 90 days.

Speaker:

That way your content can be very concrete and you're building

Speaker:

the know like,

Speaker:

and trust,

Speaker:

All right,

Speaker:

let's do this.

Speaker:

Can I present to you a specific type of person and

Speaker:

we'll walk through then what they should do?

Speaker:

How does that sound?

Speaker:

Yes. So although this might not apply to everybody who's listening.

Speaker:

I think some of the concepts you'll be able to make

Speaker:

extensions with,

Speaker:

but let's go with someone.

Speaker:

Alison, who has an Instagram account,

Speaker:

they have a hundred followers.

Speaker:

Okay. So I mean a nice amount,

Speaker:

but it's,

Speaker:

I don't know,

Speaker:

relatively small,

Speaker:

I guess when you look at all these people with thousands

Speaker:

and then that whole target of 10,000

Speaker:

followers and all of that.

Speaker:

So they have a hundred followers.

Speaker:

They got on Instagram because they knew they should.

Speaker:

Instagram is what everyone's talking about.

Speaker:

And since it's connected with Facebook,

Speaker:

there's decided that they were going to start their Instagram account.

Speaker:

Okay. And they've posted randomly,

Speaker:

they've posted,

Speaker:

I'm going to just be honest.

Speaker:

They've probably posted their product and product and product and product.

Speaker:

Cause that's all we in the beginning know or think we

Speaker:

should be doing and they're not getting any traction,

Speaker:

their Instagram account really hasn't grown.

Speaker:

They got a hundred people kind of in the beginning because

Speaker:

friends, family,

Speaker:

extension of friends,

Speaker:

groups, they're in that kind of thing.

Speaker:

But now it's been stagnant and they're just frustrated.

Speaker:

So let's work with that person.

Speaker:

Cause I think I know there are a lot of people

Speaker:

who are listening,

Speaker:

who are in that situation,

Speaker:

what do we do?

Speaker:

We sell a product.

Speaker:

What are we going to sell?

Speaker:

We sell pottery.

Speaker:

Let's go with pottery.

Speaker:

So this is my situation.

Speaker:

I don't know what to do.

Speaker:

So the first thing I guess I should be doing is

Speaker:

figuring out what my Instagram objective is,

Speaker:

but I want to sell pottery.

Speaker:

So what do I do?

Speaker:

Okay. So I'm just going to assume it's a female.

Speaker:

I'm gonna call her Sally.

Speaker:

Oh good.

Speaker:

Sally. Yeah.

Speaker:

Sally sells Patrie.

Speaker:

Sally sells pottery.

Speaker:

The first thing that Sally needs to do once she's established

Speaker:

her Instagram objective.

Speaker:

So at this point,

Speaker:

I think she would want to build brand awareness.

Speaker:

She only has a hundred followers.

Speaker:

You can only sell so much pottery to one person,

Speaker:

I would assume.

Speaker:

So at this point,

Speaker:

you really want to build some brand awareness so you can

Speaker:

expand your audience.

Speaker:

So once Sally focuses on brand awareness,

Speaker:

now she needs to move to who is her ideal client?

Speaker:

Who does she want to serve and help?

Speaker:

Who does she want to expose the pottery world to most

Speaker:

likely it would probably be maybe females,

Speaker:

35 and over I'm assuming here.

Speaker:

So the biggest mistake that I see on Instagram is their

Speaker:

bios. Because a lot of us being entrepreneurs,

Speaker:

we are multi-passionate creative beans.

Speaker:

So we think that our Instagram bio needs to be all

Speaker:

about what we do,

Speaker:

what we sell and all the different things that we do.

Speaker:

The problem is when we make our Instagram bio about us,

Speaker:

it becomes vanity metrics.

Speaker:

And to be honest,

Speaker:

when someone goes to look at your bio,

Speaker:

they really don't care about everything that you do.

Speaker:

They don't care that you're a coffee lover.

Speaker:

They don't care that you own a dog.

Speaker:

They want to know what's in it for them.

Speaker:

So we need to make our Instagram bio about our I

Speaker:

deal audience.

Speaker:

And your Instagram bio has three important parts.

Speaker:

You need to state who you serve,

Speaker:

what is their main problem?

Speaker:

And what is your solution?

Speaker:

So Sally in her bio would have some sort of,

Speaker:

I help statement.

Speaker:

Cause remember we're helping and serving our audience.

Speaker:

We're not selling to them.

Speaker:

We want to help them.

Speaker:

So maybe Sally's statement might be,

Speaker:

and I'm just really throwing this out in the wind.

Speaker:

Like I help women jazz up their homes.

Speaker:

You know,

Speaker:

what would be in the past?

Speaker:

Is it just Add some spice to an environment?

Speaker:

Yeah. Like It'd be something like that.

Speaker:

Like I help women spice up their homes or jazz up

Speaker:

their homes or something through custom pottery and whatever else Sally

Speaker:

might do.

Speaker:

So maybe it's custom pottery or different sized pottery.

Speaker:

So I would have to work specifically with that person to

Speaker:

really look at their store,

Speaker:

to see what they are.

Speaker:

But that is kind of the main formula to your Instagram

Speaker:

bio is to have that sentence.

Speaker:

If you were to look at mine,

Speaker:

I have a sentence in there and it always starts with

Speaker:

I help because I want to help my audience.

Speaker:

So a person reading that go,

Speaker:

Ooh, custom pottery,

Speaker:

oh, I need to jazz up my home.

Speaker:

I'd love pottery.

Speaker:

That is how you're going to attract the right people to

Speaker:

you as you need to audit your bio first,

Speaker:

So the best way to do this is through content categories.

And you can basically just categorize the types of posts that

you're going to create.

And they can be something like lifestyle posts.

It can be a behind the scenes post.

you're going to be posting then whether it's once a week,

And then you don't have to look at it again.

And once you feel really consistent with that,

But don't try to do all the things at once because

the most visibility reach engagement because that's what Instagram is favoring.

But that doesn't mean that you can't still grow with newsfeed

posts that is never going away.

You still need to build the know like and trust.

So even though you might get the visibility through Instagram reels,

that doesn't mean it's your ideal audience and how are they

really going to know what you sell or do.

If that's all you provide is Instagram reels at first,

they might be entertained by you.

But then after a while,

they're going to wonder,

well, what do you do then?

They're just going to unfollow You.

Well, and honestly,

I know it feels great when people have a million followers,

but if they're not someone who would buy your product,

it's feels good.

It's makes for social credibility,

But it doesn't really help you in terms of your business

growth because you're not bringing in any sales.

They're not your people.

Yes. You want quality followers over quantity.

Don't worry about getting to a certain number of followers.

to get the swipe up feature that does not matter.

you can take a look at some people on Instagram that

have over 30,000

followers. But if you look at their posts and they only

have maybe 20 likes and six comments that is not quality,

they may be bought them.

So we have to be very careful when we look at

others and we assume that they're successful.

but we really don't know anything about their business on the

but when you don't move to a state of doing and

implement anything you've learned,

you're never going to grow.

So show your face and start implementing,

Sometimes I think when you're doing that learning and that downloading

and the analyzing and oh my gosh,

I can't do it till I have that content planner that

you feel like you're taking action,

but you really haven't taken any effective action.

That's going to get you any followers.
