Speaker:Wow. That's a lot to take in Deborah.
Speaker:Welcome to the show.
Speaker:It's great to be here.
Speaker:So thank you.
Speaker:So I'd like to start off each episode by talking a
Speaker:little bit about who you are in a different way,
Speaker:and that is by having you describe yourself in the way
Speaker:of a motivational candle.
Speaker:So if you were to create a candle that has a
Speaker:color that really resonates with you and some type of a
Speaker:saying, describe to us what your candle would look like.
Speaker:Okay, well,
Speaker:my favorite color is pink and I like pink because pink
Speaker:is a combination of white and red.
Speaker:So white symbolizes heaven to me and red earth.
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:my candle,
Speaker:the motivational quote says what I,
Speaker:I can achieve.
Speaker:I create from a place of joy,
Speaker:how can it get any better than this?
Speaker:I love that because talking about the positivity in the fact
Speaker:that what you want to create and what you want to
Speaker:achieve can be done.
Speaker:Yes. I like to ask a question because then the universe
Speaker:can answer it and the universe loves questions.
Speaker:So then I can become open to receiving and surrendering to
Speaker:what shows up for me.
Speaker:After I ask the question every day,
Speaker:something new can happen.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:Well, I'm one of those believers in law of attraction and
Speaker:that nature is super powerful.
Speaker:So I'm right with you there.
Speaker:I want to talk about earth,
Speaker:wind, and flowers.
Speaker:This sounds so interesting to me.
Speaker:So bring this back now.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:the business has been around now for almost 20 years,
Speaker:but talk to us a little bit about how it got
Speaker:started and how everything evolved As a child.
Speaker:I was very sensitive to energy.
Speaker:I remember being in my grandfather's garden and just loving the
Speaker:garden, but then we had an L train in our backyard
Speaker:and it was like in the alleyway,
Speaker:just back from our backyard and it would come and I'd
Speaker:be so happy in the garden.
Speaker:And then this terrible energy of this electrical sparks and things
Speaker:that came from the L train.
Speaker:It really agitated me.
Speaker:And as I was in the garden though,
Speaker:I discovered that if I could be by the flowers and
Speaker:have my feet on the grass,
Speaker:and when the train came by,
Speaker:the flowers seemed to protect me and I felt less agitated.
Speaker:And then when I was an adult,
Speaker:I created my own garden and I ended up just realizing
Speaker:how much I love being around the flowers all the time.
Speaker:It was just a natural thing for me,
Speaker:but I went to school to study health and nutrition.
Speaker:I was in college and then I realized,
Speaker:why am I doing this?
Speaker:Because I just want to be around flowers and be in
Speaker:the garden.
Speaker:I don't want to be a dietician or something,
Speaker:even though I love nutrition because we used to grow our
Speaker:own vegetables and organic soil.
Speaker:And I thought that was what I needed to do,
Speaker:but to help people.
Speaker:But I decided to go to school and I went to
Speaker:American floral art school in Chicago.
Speaker:And I got certified as a designer.
Speaker:And I really,
Speaker:really did enjoy really for over a decade.
Speaker:I was making flower arrangements and created bouquet for the bride.
Speaker:I would deliver,
Speaker:get well arrangements to the hospitals and new baby.
Speaker:And I just really got a lot of joy from working
Speaker:with the flowers.
Speaker:But then after 10 years,
Speaker:I just got like frustrated because I knew there was something
Speaker:more, but I couldn't pinpoint it like this it's deeper level
Speaker:with flowers that I couldn't express it,
Speaker:but I knew it was inside.
Speaker:I just didn't know what to do.
Speaker:I loved my work,
Speaker:but I just knew there was something else.
Speaker:So I confided in a friend of mine who was actually
Speaker:a psychologist.
Speaker:And she said,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I heard of a psychiatrist.
Speaker:That's teaching a class,
Speaker:it's coming up in a few weeks.
Speaker:And she is educating flower essences.
Speaker:Apparently she's using them for her clients.
Speaker:And it's helping with depression and anxiety and panic disorders,
Speaker:insomnia. And the class goes for a week.
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:Oh, I'm taking that class.
Speaker:Definitely. It sounds right up my alley.
Speaker:And then really within five minutes of the class,
Speaker:she started talking about what a flower essence was.
Speaker:I had never heard of an essence,
Speaker:but right away,
Speaker:she talked about how you take the plasm of the flower
Speaker:and you float it in a crystal ball of water.
Speaker:And the essence is really from the Duke and also from
Speaker:the sun,
Speaker:you put it in the sun and the sunlight,
Speaker:and it's held in the spring water in the bowl,
Speaker:but it's something like you two with the flower and Oh
Speaker:my God,
Speaker:that's what I was doing at my grandfather's garden.
Speaker:With these flowers,
Speaker:like I was sipping the do,
Speaker:and I was putting it on my body.
Speaker:You were,
Speaker:yeah. Did anyone tell you to do that?
Speaker:Or you just naturally did it?
Speaker:No. No.
Speaker:I was trying to get some help Because of that train
Speaker:coming by So sensitive.
Speaker:It's just stupid train.
Speaker:You have the train to think.
Speaker:Now I do.
Speaker:Everything's on purpose.
Speaker:And I knew right away,
Speaker:within five minutes of her talking about this,
Speaker:I go,
Speaker:this is my calling.
Speaker:This is it.
Speaker:This is what I'm feeling inside.
Speaker:When I can play with this,
Speaker:you know?
Speaker:And I went home right away.
Speaker:I made my first flower essence.
Speaker:It was so easy because I had really been a toonie
Speaker:with the essences all my life,
Speaker:even designing the bouquets Before you even really knew it.
Speaker:So, all right,
Speaker:first off,
Speaker:I have to tell you that this is really interesting because
Speaker:a lot of people that I run into are saying they
Speaker:want to start a business.
Speaker:They're not sure what,
Speaker:maybe it's a second career,
Speaker:or they don't want to work in the bank anymore,
Speaker:whatever it is,
Speaker:but they're trying to figure out what it should be.
Speaker:And your story,
Speaker:even up to this point is a perfect example because one
Speaker:of the things I keep hearing from people as we do
Speaker:these podcasts is it's something that really connected with them when
Speaker:they were children.
Speaker:I hear it over and over and over again.
Speaker:So that is really interesting because you're just reinforcing that idea.
Speaker:So if any of you are listening and you're thinking about
Speaker:a business,
Speaker:what did you love so much as a child that may
Speaker:give you some clues as to what to do?
Speaker:But now Debra question.
Speaker:So you were working as a floral designer for 10 years,
Speaker:and I think you loved it because you were talking about
Speaker:how you love nature,
Speaker:but were you feeling like there was just something missing?
Speaker:There was something more,
Speaker:Yeah, it was.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:when I first started designing flowers,
Speaker:I was happier than anything because I could make these,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:work with flowers every day,
Speaker:hold them,
Speaker:see the color,
Speaker:smell them.
Speaker:And to this day I still design flowers.
Speaker:Like every day I'll take a walk and I can't help
Speaker:make a bouquet for myself.
Speaker:And I can still do weddings if I want,
Speaker:but my passion really is working on the deep level with
Speaker:the essences.
Speaker:And like I said,
Speaker:I feel it's just a calling.
Speaker:Like I knew there was something more.
Speaker:And I think I was doing that.
Speaker:People would say my designs different from anybody else's because I
Speaker:think I just felt it in my heart,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:which flower would be for the scale.
Speaker:Well arrangement,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:for the person in the hospital.
Speaker:I'm just thinking here too,
Speaker:that you were very open.
Speaker:We've kind of already established subtly here that both of us
Speaker:believe in that law of attraction and the energy and all
Speaker:of that.
Speaker:But it sounds like because you were feeling like maybe there
Speaker:was something more,
Speaker:you were very receptive to clues or ideas.
Speaker:I reached out for help because I really was getting frustrated.
Speaker:Like I even said,
Speaker:I'm dying creatively.
Speaker:There's something more.
Speaker:I know I can feel it.
Speaker:I didn't really.
Speaker:And thank God my friend said,
Speaker:there's this class.
Speaker:And really,
Speaker:I think it's all on purpose.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I asked that question,
Speaker:like I said,
Speaker:if you asked a question,
Speaker:be open to the answer,
Speaker:what shows up for you?
Speaker:Oh, good point.
Speaker:I say,
Speaker:how can I get any better than this?
Speaker:I was happy,
Speaker:but I knew I could be happier.
Speaker:Right. Go to a deeper level still within the floral realm,
Speaker:if you will.
Speaker:And so when you took the class,
Speaker:you said right away,
Speaker:when you were in that class,
Speaker:you're like,
Speaker:okay, I've landed it.
Speaker:This is it.
Speaker:This is what I should be doing.
Speaker:And so what happens from there though?
Speaker:You have the thought,
Speaker:but then where do you take it from there?
Speaker:Well, I went home that day and I made my first
Speaker:essence immediately.
Speaker:It was so natural for me.
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:this is what I've been doing.
Speaker:I've known all my life and I made it,
Speaker:but I was a little kind of nervous.
Speaker:Cause I brought the essence to the class.
Speaker:The next day we still had,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:a week long class.
Speaker:And of course I drank the essence.
Speaker:You can drink it.
Speaker:Essences are taken.
Speaker:You can drink them,
Speaker:drops on the tongue.
Speaker:I put them in sprays.
Speaker:That was something I did later.
Speaker:So I drank the essence.
Speaker:I felt great.
Speaker:I brought the tincture to the class and in this class
Speaker:we had other psychologists,
Speaker:but we also had some people are very sensitive to energy
Speaker:intuitives and they could actually see energy.
Speaker:Some people can see auras.
Speaker:And I walked into the class and the one really exceptionally
Speaker:intuitive man actually was taking a class.
Speaker:He goes,
Speaker:what did you do?
Speaker:I was very shy back then the essences have helped me
Speaker:be more outgoing,
Speaker:but he was,
Speaker:what did you do?
Speaker:I go,
Speaker:well, what do you mean?
Speaker:And he goes from yesterday,
Speaker:today, your aura it's completely changed.
Speaker:It's so beautifully bright.
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:And the flower it made the essence of it was a
Speaker:pink flower.
Speaker:He says,
Speaker:Oh, beautiful pink aura.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:well, actually I made an essence.
Speaker:And then the teacher,
Speaker:everyone got their attention and they go,
Speaker:can we try it?
Speaker:Wow, sure.
Speaker:So they pass the essence or out with then I knew,
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:Oh my God,
Speaker:it took,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:like I did it,
Speaker:I knew it.
Speaker:But then to have right away at affirmation that I made
Speaker:an essence,
Speaker:Essences actually have a physical effect on you on your body
Speaker:and on how you're feeling or your health or what is
Speaker:it? All of the above.
Speaker:They are just like that little girl in the garden.
Speaker:I knew when that train was coming by.
Speaker:And I had anxiety about that noise and that I knew
Speaker:that if I sip from the do of the roses and
Speaker:the peonies,
Speaker:that it would go in my energy and I would feel
Speaker:soothed and I'd be stronger,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:less sensitive to that by bration.
Speaker:And it would cleanse the energy too.
Speaker:Now, somehow I knew that intuitively,
Speaker:but I didn't know how it worked.
Speaker:So that's why I had to go back to school.
Speaker:I saw how powerful this was and natural to.
Speaker:I had to know how each flower worked on the energy
Speaker:field, but right away,
Speaker:I kept making essences and using them for myself.
Speaker:And it changed my life.
Speaker:Like all my dreams start coming,
Speaker:true, everything up better in every area of my life.
Speaker:Just things should be Quickly.
Speaker:That's crazy.
Speaker:Really my prosperity,
Speaker:my dreams,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:relationship. I had my baby,
Speaker:a healthy child and you know,
Speaker:just like I got a new house,
Speaker:I got married.
Speaker:Yeah. Everything came to in my life.
Speaker:And I was pretty stuck before that beautiful flower essence that
Speaker:I made.
Speaker:That's how powerful they are.
Speaker:So I had to go back to school and learn,
Speaker:which was fine because it was a passion.
Speaker:I couldn't stop learning more and more and more about this.
Speaker:That's all I wanted to do is learn about these flowers.
Speaker:Oh, this is so interesting.
Speaker:Deborah. So what happened next?
Speaker:Well, Earth,
Speaker:wind and flowers actually started.
Speaker:d open it as a flower shop in:Speaker:I had all the equipment and so forth.
Speaker:So I just continue to make essences.
Speaker:I just focused on that.
Speaker:So earth,
Speaker:wind and flowers started in:Speaker:And then in terms of you turning it over and adding
Speaker:in the balancing sprays,
Speaker:that would have been 10 years later,
Speaker:right? No,
Speaker:I was designing for other floral shops prior to opening my
Speaker:own. So I was a designer and then I decided to
Speaker:open my own flower shop and then right away when I
Speaker:did that,
Speaker:I learned about the essences.
Speaker:Got it.
Speaker:So what happens then?
Speaker:What would happen?
Speaker:I kept making essences and reading about it and using them
Speaker:on myself and my family.
Speaker:And I started getting a few clients at a women's group
Speaker:that we would meet we'd study books and stuff,
Speaker:but you know,
Speaker:they started using the essences and we were just having a
Speaker:lot of fun with it.
Speaker:But quickly this happened,
Speaker:I got a phone call from a writer from the Chicago
Speaker:Tribune and she said,
Speaker:I worked for tempo and I got your name from several
Speaker:chiropractors and psychologists in the area.
Speaker:They said that you make flower essences.
Speaker:I call it What?
Speaker:Like, like how'd you get my name Started doing it.
Speaker:And she said,
Speaker:well, that's okay.
Speaker:You know what?
Speaker:We're doing an article on flower essences.
Speaker:And there's very,
Speaker:we're finding where it's a really specialized field is very few
Speaker:people actually make an essence and we really appreciate it.
Speaker:It's okay.
Speaker:If you just start with,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:would you mind if we interviewed you and again,
Speaker:I was a little hesitant,
Speaker:but then I go,
Speaker:well, Okay,
Speaker:because you were still shy back then,
Speaker:right? I was still shy.
Speaker:Josh flower essences.
Speaker:They Help you with self-confidence and eventually I took the right
Speaker:ones to help me.
Speaker:And I'm a lot more confident and I'm not shy anymore
Speaker:at all.
Speaker:So I did the interview and it was quite interesting.
Speaker:I really enjoyed the interview.
Speaker:And then she said,
Speaker:can we have a photographer come over and take pictures of
Speaker:you making an essence?
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:Oh no,
Speaker:I can't do that.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:my husband doesn't even know I'm making essences yet.
Speaker:I'm just kind of learning it,
Speaker:you know?
Speaker:And it's kind of like one of those things where you're
Speaker:just attuning with the flower.
Speaker:You just want to do it.
Speaker:You in the flower,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you're not just with other people watching you while you're still
Speaker:Testing the ground a little bit.
Speaker:It's crazy that they contacted you so soon in your transition.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:no, I can't have a photographer.
Speaker:And then she called me the next day.
Speaker:She was pleased.
Speaker:She begged me please.
Speaker:It would really help the article.
Speaker:I go,
Speaker:okay. I said,
Speaker:all right.
Speaker:So he came over and we did a photo shoot and
Speaker:Ashley, he loved it.
Speaker:He's like I reported on politics and things.
Speaker:And he was,
Speaker:this was really enjoyable for me.
Speaker:I really loved it.
Speaker:So within two weeks,
Speaker:I'm in the grocery store and I look,
Speaker:and there's my picture on the cover of the Tribune in
Speaker:color. Well,
Speaker:how exciting our In a crystal ball in my garden.
Speaker:And then there's a big,
Speaker:huge cover page on temple,
Speaker:on color,
Speaker:and then the cover.
Speaker:And I was like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:wow. Well then I realized,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:This is not just a business.
Speaker:It's an evolution of my being a florist.
Speaker:And it's something that was in my soul.
Speaker:And it really,
Speaker:it filled that creative desire that I had.
Speaker:I knew something,
Speaker:it was a deeper level.
Speaker:So I realized,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:This is a calling.
Speaker:It's not a business,
Speaker:it's a calling.
Speaker:I'm going to be doing this for the rest of my
Speaker:life. And this is what I'm here to do.
Speaker:It's a mission.
Speaker:That's Powerful.
Speaker:That's really cool.
Speaker:Yeah, because I made this kind of change in my career.
Speaker:It was still with flowers,
Speaker:but I really just stuck with it.
Speaker:And I loved it.
Speaker:I was very happy and I realized that by being featured
Speaker:like that right away,
Speaker:it was only like an affirmation that,
Speaker:Hey, you know what,
Speaker:you're on the right path.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:stick with it.
Speaker:This is where you're supposed to be.
Speaker:And then having something like a publication like that come out
Speaker:in a newspaper.
Speaker:I thought,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:This also speaks to me that I'm to get this in
Speaker:the mainstream,
Speaker:people need this,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:people need this.
Speaker:So the universe is supporting me moving forward on this path.
Speaker:That makes sense to me.
Speaker:Plus you weren't getting affirmation from people,
Speaker:chiropractors, people who are already using it.
Speaker:People from back in the class a while ago,
Speaker:that it really does make some changes.
Speaker:It affects people.
Speaker:Tell you a little more about how they work.
Speaker:I was called right away to make an essence of an
Speaker:Iris flower,
Speaker:the Iris flowers purple.
Speaker:And it's a spring flower.
Speaker:So spring flowers really support our rejuvenation of our energy.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:think about the flowers coming up in the spring.
Speaker:After a long winter,
Speaker:those are the ones that are really,
Speaker:really vibrant,
Speaker:right? They last real long.
Speaker:So was I made an essence right away of it.
Speaker:It's used for cleansing and opening up any stuck energy in
Speaker:the body.
Speaker:And when you have stuck energy in the body,
Speaker:you tend to procrastinate.
Speaker:You can be a little stubborn,
Speaker:will tantrumy even like toddlers.
Speaker:Sometimes they,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:when you get angry,
Speaker:you're kind of holding on to energy.
Speaker:I was so glad I had this essence because one day
Speaker:my daughter,
Speaker:she was a teenager at the time.
Speaker:And we were on our way,
Speaker:driving to the Walgreens to get some poster board for a
Speaker:project. She was due the next day.
Speaker:And suddenly she just got really stubborn and she goes,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:I don't want to do this.
Speaker:I'm not going to do this project.
Speaker:I'm going to just get an F Just what you wanted
Speaker:to hear mom.
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:what are you doing?
Speaker:I go,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I go,
Speaker:Lindsay. I said,
Speaker:what spray do you need?
Speaker:And she was looking at me and she was creativity.
Speaker:I know.
Speaker:Yep. You named the sprays after different things.
Speaker:Yeah. Titled chase.
Speaker:I call it creativity because I was flower helps with your
Speaker:creative flow.
Speaker:So if you have stuck energy,
Speaker:like even like writers black and I'm an artist too,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:sometimes you just can't create,
Speaker:you just can't.
Speaker:Right. Well,
Speaker:I'm thinking a lot of our audience can relate to that
Speaker:because everyone's creator is here.
Speaker:Yeah. Day.
Speaker:Like you feel stuck and you're procrastinating.
Speaker:Want to get this,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you have to get done.
Speaker:You're really don't.
Speaker:You just don't want to eat and you won't do it.
Speaker:And so if you missed yourself with Iris essence and I
Speaker:put a little lavender essential oil in that too,
Speaker:because that helps to calm the nervous system,
Speaker:because really you can't create anything.
Speaker:If you are under stress or if you have stuck energy
Speaker:in your field,
Speaker:your things aren't flowing,
Speaker:you can't create Well,
Speaker:and your best work won't come out.
Speaker:Either. It won't,
Speaker:You mean like a school project,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and you don't want to do it.
Speaker:That's hard.
Speaker:So what are you going to do?
Speaker:So I made her a battle.
Speaker:We got the poster board and a fresh bottle and I
Speaker:missed it.
Speaker:Her over her head.
Speaker:I missed her,
Speaker:her body,
Speaker:her, you know,
Speaker:around her and right away,
Speaker:she went to her room and I heard the computer going
Speaker:and the printer and heard her cutting and pasting stuff,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:guys up there.
Speaker:And then she came down within 45 minutes and she goes,
Speaker:okay, I'm all done.
Speaker:I'm going to go out and play with my friends.
Speaker:Okay. So the next day she comes home from school and
Speaker:she saw a big smile on her face and she has
Speaker:a poster board and she goes,
Speaker:mom, I got an a on my project.
Speaker:Oh gosh,
Speaker:Actually I had my website and I have this creativity spray
Speaker:was being sold on my website.
Speaker:And so she went on my site and she wrote a
Speaker:testimony. She was my mom's spray,
Speaker:her sprays work And fast too.
Speaker:They work fast.
Speaker:Like seriously,
Speaker:you sprayed it.
Speaker:And she went up to her room almost immediately and got
Speaker:to work Like 30 seconds.
Speaker:Like not even a minute,
Speaker:you start shifting your energy.
Speaker:And sometimes it takes seven minutes or so,
Speaker:but we heard it within 30 seconds,
Speaker:seven minutes.
Speaker:You're really shifting that energy right away.
Speaker:Stubbornness and procrastination is stuck energy and you're holding onto it,
Speaker:you know?
Speaker:And then the essential oil lavender helps to calm the nervous
Speaker:system. And so the two of them work synergistically together very,
Speaker:very well.
Speaker:So Deborah,
Speaker:let's talk a little bit more about the creation of the
Speaker:product. You'd already been trained on how to make it the
Speaker:storage. I'm sure like what's shelf life on the product.
Speaker:Well, the shelf life on the product,
Speaker:I've had it tested and we use the natural preservative.
Speaker:So it can be a couple of years,
Speaker:but we say year after year,
Speaker:you don't just get a new bottle.
Speaker:She'll you're going to use up a four ounce bottle within
Speaker:a year,
Speaker:six months to a year anyway.
Speaker:Okay. So that helps you in terms of production,
Speaker:you can make quite a bit and still have it be
Speaker:fresh. Oh yeah.
Speaker:So when you were back creating and envisioning what this product
Speaker:was going to look like,
Speaker:talk us through a little bit about just what your thought
Speaker:process was about,
Speaker:how was it going to be presented to market?
Speaker:What kind of container,
Speaker:what kind of labeling?
Speaker:How did that all progress?
Speaker:Well, My affirmation that I said on my pink candle in
Speaker:the beginning,
Speaker:it's what I envision I can achieve.
Speaker:So I like to think of myself as a visionary.
Speaker:It comes naturally to me.
Speaker:I can feel things and actually envision it quite easily.
Speaker:So like the creativity spray,
Speaker:I knew what the Iris flower did after taking it for
Speaker:myself and sometimes even wake up and I go,
Speaker:Oh yeah,
Speaker:lavender. Perfect.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:that would be a good balance for this.
Speaker:And then I could see the label.
Speaker:I like to use the harmonious quality of the flower.
Speaker:So it's,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:user-friendly to somebody who actually looks at the bottle and says
Speaker:creativity and they go,
Speaker:Oh yeah,
Speaker:my creativity is really downright now,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I could use that.
Speaker:So the balance would be being procrastination,
Speaker:stubbornness writer's block.
Speaker:So I just put the positive word on the bottle.
Speaker:So I could envision these quite easily.
Speaker:Like if I have a flower,
Speaker:like I have a spray use for the real estate market,
Speaker:this spray,
Speaker:all you have to do is mist your house.
Speaker:And you can miss yourself when you decide to sell Your
Speaker:home. No way.
Speaker:Yeah. It strengthens the whole energy field and you end up
Speaker:attracting what it is that you need.
Speaker:You're like a little bit of a witch doctor,
Speaker:a modern day,
Speaker:or maybe like a dream fairy or something.
Speaker:I don't know,
Speaker:pretty mad How it works,
Speaker:but actually it's flowers are attractors.
Speaker:They tracked it and they start blossoming.
Speaker:And then they tracked in the bees,
Speaker:the pollinators hummingbirds,
Speaker:the air tractors.
Speaker:I get the purest form of a flower and I put
Speaker:it in the bottle.
Speaker:And if you missed yourself,
Speaker:you're going to get filled in with this beautiful attraction energy.
Speaker:So you become the attractor.
Speaker:I actually use all these sprays on myself before I market
Speaker:them. And I had to sell my house.
Speaker:Like it was on the market for a year and a
Speaker:half. It was back in the market when it was like
Speaker:2005 and the market was sluggish and I bought another house
Speaker:and it was in Lake Geneva and I put money down
Speaker:on everything.
Speaker:I was really stressed out.
Speaker:What do I do?
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:what do you do?
Speaker:You put a St Joseph's statue in the ground.
Speaker:You got a good realtor,
Speaker:but you know,
Speaker:there's nothing else that you can do.
Speaker:Other than that,
Speaker:really. So all of a sudden,
Speaker:like I had this vision of a formula and I knew
Speaker:which flower essences to put in.
Speaker:And then I got which scent it should be.
Speaker:I took an essential oil and I missed it.
Speaker:My body,
Speaker:I miss it,
Speaker:all the rooms in my house.
Speaker:Within three days,
Speaker:I had a couple just came up on their bike and
Speaker:they admired my house and they go,
Speaker:we have been admiring your house.
Speaker:We'd been driving by last few days and they go,
Speaker:can we see it?
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:sure. And I showed him the house,
Speaker:the realtor wasn't around.
Speaker:And that night they call me,
Speaker:we are going to buy your house.
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:that's crazy.
Speaker:And they paid to the penny asking,
Speaker:right. Wow.
Speaker:I'm going to need some of that because my assistant's trying
Speaker:to sell her house.
Speaker:So we're going to talk about that a little bit more
Speaker:later, but let's talk a little bit just because I'm thinking
Speaker:that some of our listeners might be in a situation where
Speaker:they're thinking of a product.
Speaker:I'm curious,
Speaker:you're saying bottle.
Speaker:So you already knew that you were going to put it
Speaker:in a battle.
Speaker:How did you go about deciding what material or sourcing the
Speaker:bottle? Well,
Speaker:first one had flowers is earth friendly.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:we promote heirloom seeds,
Speaker:non GMO,
Speaker:organic native plants,
Speaker:just as back to the garden as possible.
Speaker:I didn't want to use plastic bottles.
Speaker:Okay. I said,
Speaker:well, you know what?
Speaker:We're going to use glass bottles.
Speaker:That was came real easy to me.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:this is going to come in a glass bottle.
Speaker:It's going to be in a spray because you can drink
Speaker:them, drops on your tongue.
Speaker:But I think it's,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you can miss your house.
Speaker:You can miss your body.
Speaker:You can miss your pillow.
Speaker:You can miss your friend,
Speaker:your dog,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:it's more fun to share it like that in a Mister.
Speaker:It works just as effectively,
Speaker:probably even better than if you drank it.
Speaker:But I didn't want to do clear glass and to protect
Speaker:it from sun light.
Speaker:So we had a longer shelf life.
Speaker:So I went ahead and used the blue bottles and the
Speaker:blue bottles really protect the formula.
Speaker:And that keeps it very,
Speaker:very vibrant.
Speaker:You want to keep it as high vibrational,
Speaker:as possible,
Speaker:as pure as possible.
Speaker:Of course.
Speaker:So that came pretty easy.
Speaker:You don't use the glass bottles.
Speaker:I worked on the preservative for awhile,
Speaker:took me a little bit.
Speaker:We had a laboratory that tested it and we found a
Speaker:really great organic preservative that,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we have a long shelf life even over a year,
Speaker:but you know,
Speaker:I just tell people,
Speaker:you don't use it in a year,
Speaker:but we found that even these tinctures,
Speaker:the actual mother tincture,
Speaker:where we collect the essence and beginning,
Speaker:then we dilute it.
Speaker:They can last over a hundred years.
Speaker:I would not have expected That.
Speaker:So, and then what did you do on the pricing side?
Speaker:How did you figure out what you were going to price
Speaker:it? Because there isn't anything you were mentioning before you like,
Speaker:you're one of the few people that provides this.
Speaker:How do you determine what a price is going to be?
Speaker:Well, I have a team I consult with and they helped
Speaker:me with the pricing.
Speaker:And there's a team of a women's groups that I tap
Speaker:into. They also do a small business loans and they really,
Speaker:they give free support.
Speaker:So I check in with them on my pricing and they
Speaker:show me how to,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:always make sure that you take your costs.
Speaker:And really,
Speaker:they helped me get the actual class.
Speaker:Like we had counted all the drops of the essential oil,
Speaker:which was pretty tedious.
Speaker:Oh, that's crazy.
Speaker:Yeah. I guess you have to.
Speaker:Right. And then we got an actual cost and then they
Speaker:said, you always do all your overhead costs.
Speaker:And then you put in your profit because if you can't
Speaker:make a profit,
Speaker:then you have to make a profit.
Speaker:They call it,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:cogs cost of goods sold.
Speaker:And then you times it by three.
Speaker:So you get your overhead,
Speaker:your profit and your cost,
Speaker:and really stuck to that rule.
Speaker:And I haven't had to raise my prices really.
Speaker:And over a decade,
Speaker:I had one only one price increase when my supplies went
Speaker:up, but we've kept it really cost effective and it pays
Speaker:for our labor and they helped me with that.
Speaker:And even if I do a trade show,
Speaker:I can solve,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we look at the cost,
Speaker:we look at my time if anyone wants to make their
Speaker:own product,
Speaker:but you got to take that in consideration your time,
Speaker:your expertise as well.
Speaker:That's something that we're so bad at here,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:as creators in terms of making sure to value the time
Speaker:that it takes to create something.
Speaker:So summary for the listeners in terms of when you're thinking
Speaker:about what your price is going to be,
Speaker:the elements are the cost of actually creating it.
Speaker:So that's the materials that are being put in any additional
Speaker:packaging is included in there.
Speaker:The time,
Speaker:the labor that it takes to put it together in terms
Speaker:of time.
Speaker:And then as Deborah's talking about,
Speaker:you also want to put in overhead,
Speaker:you might run an office,
Speaker:you have systems,
Speaker:you have a website,
Speaker:all of that somehow has to get covered and then margin.
Speaker:This is money for yourself.
Speaker:This is your income because if you're selling just at raw
Speaker:cost, you're never going to make it your product won't be
Speaker:viable for the future.
Speaker:The other point that you're bringing up Deborah super smart is
Speaker:that you're relying on other people too.
Speaker:And you talk about having some advisers or some local people
Speaker:that you can go and just run your ideas by because
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you're the expert in your product.
Speaker:And it's nice to have extra eyes on the business side
Speaker:of things too.
and you can get free help from chamber of commerce.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:they're retired business people that they love to help.
Speaker:They'll sit down,
Speaker:you can go meet at Starbucks or,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:have a nice meeting.
Speaker:I always have a sounding board when I'm making bigger decisions
Speaker:of growth.
Speaker:And yes,
Speaker:it's really a smart thing to do.
Speaker:So this all fabulous,
Speaker:obviously the industry's flowers.
Speaker:So it's pretty,
Speaker:it's smells good.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:all of that,
Speaker:but you had to have some challenges along the way.
Speaker:Can you share one with us and then walk us through
Speaker:what you did to get past it?
Speaker:Sure. I think my biggest challenge and,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I have such a passion for my work,
Speaker:so I just love doing it.
Speaker:But in the beginning,
Speaker:1997, it was hard to have a product that really at
Speaker:the time,
Speaker:I think it was ahead of the times people were still
Speaker:using for breeze and things like that.
Speaker:And now,
Speaker:now everyone wants to get back to organic products.
Speaker:non-GMO vegan things that are made in smaller batches,
Speaker:heirloom seeds,
Speaker:and they realize the value of it.
Speaker:Now, you know,
Speaker:back then plus energy,
Speaker:everyone knows about energy now,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:everyone does yoga.
Speaker:It's the big thing now.
Speaker:Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker:They go to their acupuncturist,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and people get lasting results.
Speaker:So these are energetic balancing sprays.
Speaker:So I think with,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:stress is at an all time high people and going through
Speaker:change and transition,
Speaker:kids are stressed out at school.
Speaker:They get frustrated.
Speaker:The sprays are perfect product for the times now,
Speaker:but that was,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:20 years ago I started this,
Speaker:but I'm finding out,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:markets are really opening up now because they really understand the
Speaker:work. So the frustrating part when it was ahead of its
Speaker:time. So the challenge was that people just did couldn't relate
Speaker:to it,
Speaker:I guess.
Speaker:Yeah. People like,
Speaker:yeah, they didn't really relate to,
Speaker:I would tell them what I did and they're like,
Speaker:Oh, okay.
Speaker:But that's why I went back and I educated.
Speaker:And I go to my stores that carry my products and
Speaker:I meet with customers,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:one-on-one, I do little mini sessions with them to help them
Speaker:select the spray that they need for the challenge that they're
Speaker:going through.
Speaker:And people are now they're really like,
Speaker:they use them every day.
Speaker:Like, I don't know what I'd do without my spray.
Speaker:Yeah. So the person to person contact really got you over
Speaker:that hump,
Speaker:it sounds like you're primed for the future.
Speaker:Just what you were talking about because the market is now
Speaker:ready for it.
Speaker:And it's the big,
Speaker:hot thing.
Speaker:But back then,
Speaker:you're right.
Speaker:People couldn't really relate to it.
Speaker:And I totally understand,
Speaker:because one of the businesses that I own,
Speaker:the ribbon print company,
Speaker:same type of thing,
Speaker:because we sell custom ribbon printers,
Speaker:but most people don't understand.
Speaker:They think we print ribbon for people.
Speaker:Like they just don't get it and it can be difficult
Speaker:and it's not because they can't get it.
Speaker:It's just because it's so different.
Speaker:And it makes me think for a second,
Speaker:I'm going a little off track,
Speaker:but I think it would be really valuable for our listeners
Speaker:is that I often run into people who say,
Speaker:Oh, you know what?
Speaker:I love baking.
Speaker:And I would love to make cupcakes,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:like that could be my business,
Speaker:but so many other people are doing it.
Speaker:People will say things like that.
Speaker:Like everything's already been done things,
Speaker:whether it's jewelry or a knit shop with yarn or,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:whatever it is.
Speaker:And I would suggest to you that it might not be
Speaker:as bad as you're thinking to go in and do something
Speaker:that yes has already been done.
Speaker:The difference is you bring your personality,
Speaker:you bring your style and you bring the whole aura and
Speaker:vibe because every one of us is unique.
Speaker:Right. You bring that to your product.
Speaker:So you're listening to Deborah talking in me a little bit
Speaker:about the challenge that there is when you're bringing something to
Speaker:market that people can't relate to yet.
Speaker:So it's a whole different issue to overcome.
Speaker:So anyone who's having those doubts or those questions about whether
Speaker:they should start something because someone else has done it before,
Speaker:I want you to reconsider for the reasons that I just
Speaker:said. So would you add anything to that,
Speaker:Deborah? Well,
Speaker:I stayed dead fast,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and devoted to the work.
Speaker:Cause I knew it was a calling and that helped me,
Speaker:even though sometimes it got a little lonely,
Speaker:I didn't know a lot of people,
Speaker:I could talk about my work too,
Speaker:as much as I wanted to,
Speaker:but you know what positive thing for me too was that
Speaker:there's not a lot of people who make flower essences,
Speaker:so I don't have a lot of competition.
Speaker:So once this takes off,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:there's not enough of us to go around.
Speaker:So I don't really feel that I have to compete really
Speaker:with anybody seriously.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I'm my own unique product.
Speaker:Yeah, sure.
Speaker:Yeah. There's a lot of flower shops,
Speaker:but there's only one earth,
Speaker:wind and flowers bouncing sprays.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:So what would you say is helping you bring in sales
Speaker:today? Is there a promotion or event or some trick that
Speaker:you have up your sleeve to help bring in sales?
Speaker:Well, you know,
Speaker:I had two brick and mortar shops and I decided to
Speaker:close them because I could travel to the stores that carry
Speaker:my product and train the salespeople.
Speaker:And it freed me up to then do what I just
Speaker:started doing now is these global telesummits,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:where I can talk about my product and reach a larger
Speaker:audience. It's more about that.
Speaker:How did you get involved in the telesummits Actually,
Speaker:they contacted me.
Speaker:Everybody's contacting you.
Speaker:Wow. Attracting it in,
Speaker:I guess,
Speaker:right. Factor field.
Speaker:Because of the sprays.
Speaker:There we go.
Speaker:Yeah. I even have a spray called attraction,
Speaker:so yeah.
Speaker:I'm constantly making them and I miss myself,
Speaker:but yeah,
Speaker:they contacted me.
Speaker:I did my first debut a couple months ago and I
Speaker:got all new clients and I've been really busy,
Speaker:just one-on-one sessions.
Speaker:I do hour sessions with them and design custom design.
Speaker:I call it up their own bouquet of flowers.
Speaker:So, but their sprays,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:their flowers in a bottle.
Speaker:So they get their own custom bouquets and they can have
Speaker:their five to seven different ones that they need.
Speaker:But I can custom just tell where their energy's at and
Speaker:tell them which one is the priority spray for them.
Speaker:And I love it.
Speaker:I just love doing that.
Speaker:I can meet more people.
Speaker:Wait a minute.
Speaker:So when people have a consulting session with you,
Speaker:you talk with them,
Speaker:see where they're at,
Speaker:see where they're feeling like they need to be.
Speaker:And then do you suggest which bottles should have or do
Speaker:you make them their own custom spray?
Speaker:Well, I'm sensitive to energy so I can sense their energy.
Speaker:And I know like what spray they need pretty quick.
Speaker:Like within a minute they can just start talking about what's
Speaker:going on in their life.
Speaker:And I know exactly what any,
Speaker:they don't even have to talk that much because I can
Speaker:pinpoint which flower sprays are going to help them.
Speaker:And then they get to use it for the next six
Speaker:months. You know,
Speaker:it only takes really,
Speaker:sometimes it only takes a few minutes and sometimes it takes
Speaker:a week.
Speaker:Sometimes it takes three months,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:deep rooted issues,
Speaker:chronic insomnia.
Speaker:But after a while,
Speaker:then they call me and they say,
Speaker:Oh, let's work on something else.
Speaker:And, and then you'll direct them to a different one.
Speaker:Yeah. Got it.
Speaker:Oh, very cool.
Speaker:So you're not custom blending for individual people.
Speaker:Well, I'm custom creating what they need.
Speaker:I have 45 different sprays in a market,
Speaker:but I've made hundreds of them.
Speaker:So if there's one that I haven't,
Speaker:it's not on my website,
Speaker:I'll know which one I'll just custom make it for them.
Speaker:That is so cool.
Speaker:So you've got the telesummit.
Speaker:Is there anything else that you're doing just to get your
Speaker:name out there?
Speaker:Well, like I said,
Speaker:I'd like to visit the stores that carry my product.
Speaker:I come in at certain stores,
Speaker:like, you know,
Speaker:first Saturday of the month I do talks.
Speaker:I do trade shows.
Speaker:I love to meet people that are buying my products.
Speaker:I like to help them select the sprays.
Speaker:So that's fun for me,
Speaker:real people person.
Speaker:And, and once you really talk to somebody and you help
Speaker:them and they become your client or customer for life,
Speaker:sure. I've made the best friends.
Speaker:And I met Paul Well,
Speaker:and I would guess that they're also great to understand what
Speaker:your next scent should be or what your next purpose should
Speaker:be, you know,
Speaker:based on what the spray is going to do,
Speaker:staying close to your customers and listening to them is key.
Speaker:So you do that automatically.
Speaker:I do.
Speaker:I do life coaching too.
Speaker:And like I said,
Speaker:my clients,
Speaker:they have their session every month and sometimes takes a year.
Speaker:They're going through divorce and they need to move so I
Speaker:can help them through that change and transition,
Speaker:to stay balanced,
Speaker:smooth writing all the way through,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:a lot smoother than if they didn't have coach and the
Speaker:sprays to support them.
Speaker:What's your system for keeping a customer.
Speaker:Once they get started with you and become a client,
Speaker:how do you stay in touch with them as you move
Speaker:forward? They ended up contacting me when they need something and
Speaker:I'm very easily accessible.
Speaker:You can either email me or they'll call me or text
Speaker:or message me on Facebook.
Speaker:We do have a private Facebook page and I also have
Speaker:public earth,
Speaker:wind and flowers page as well.
Speaker:So you're using social media for just staying in front of
Speaker:your clients and a channel for them to be able to
Speaker:get back to you as well.
Speaker:Right. All right.
Speaker:Do you have any resources or anything that you would suggest
Speaker:that you really need to use every single day just to
Speaker:keep everything in order,
Speaker:make sure your systems are flowing properly and you know,
Speaker:the business runs smoothly?
Speaker:Well, I like to use that.
Speaker:My website is the hostess,
Speaker:Wix, Wix and Lex offers a lot of really modern up-to-date
Speaker:really fun tools for me create,
Speaker:I create a new spray tips on how to photograph them
Speaker:and add new things quite easily.
Speaker:And I also like to use,
Speaker:so yeah,
Speaker:I love the Google docs and the Google drive.
Speaker:I've been doing a new series of videos,
Speaker:so we're doing MP4.
Speaker:So where I'm out making an essence and I'm talking about
Speaker:the flower and then they're short videos,
Speaker:but you can actually feel the energy of that flower and
Speaker:get the support of it just by looking at me talking
Speaker:about it.
Speaker:So You share with me a link to one of the
Speaker:videos so that I can put it in the show notes
Speaker:so that we can see it.
Speaker:Oh sure.
Speaker:Just go on Facebook,
Speaker:earth, wind and flowers.
Speaker:And then you can just right away click on that.
Speaker:You want to add it it's a public group.
Speaker:So I post the videos there.
Speaker:And if anyone wants to get in the private page is
Speaker:called the garden of earth.
Speaker:When a flowers,
Speaker:since I started doing the telesummits,
Speaker:I offered the people that bought my packages and anyone they
Speaker:can come in on this private group and we get a
Speaker:little more one-on-one type than the public group one or the
Speaker:other. Then we post the videos.
Speaker:Perfect. And I just referenced gift biz listeners,
Speaker:the show notes page.
Speaker:So all you need to do later,
Speaker:if you're not catching something that we're talking about here,
Speaker:just jump over to that show notes page.
Speaker:I'll have links,
Speaker:I'll have any other information that I think you'd want to
Speaker:know from the podcast.
Speaker:So just jump over there.
Speaker:Any final advice,
Speaker:Deborah, for someone who's just starting out someone who's new and
Speaker:thinking, you know,
Speaker:maybe I do want to start a business for myself.
Speaker:What would you suggest now having done that for 20 years,
Speaker:you're a veteran now.
Speaker:Well, I would say follow your passion.
Speaker:And if there's something inside,
Speaker:just when you can envision,
Speaker:you can achieve.
Speaker:So take time to meditate,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:do light that candle,
Speaker:have a motivational quote for you.
Speaker:I love that.
Speaker:And then get help.
Speaker:If you don't know how to make a business marketing plan,
Speaker:you can go to chamber of commerce,
Speaker:asked for a retired businessman or woman,
Speaker:and they will help you make that business marketing plan.
Speaker:And really you have to update it like every year,
Speaker:usually really set your goals,
Speaker:set them high set and practical daily and realistic too.
Speaker:So that marketing plan,
Speaker:even a vision board is really good.
Speaker:Cause then like I'm a visual person.
Speaker:So if I can see it,
Speaker:like I was saying,
Speaker:I can achieve it and I can create just by seeing
Speaker:something right.
Speaker:It can manifest,
Speaker:like right now I want to get a new car.
Speaker:So I see myself,
Speaker:I'm feeling myself driving it.
Speaker:I can,
Speaker:there you go.
Speaker:It's going to happen.
Speaker:Perfect. Well,
Speaker:I think a lot of people will have an idea and
Speaker:they're not sure what that first step is.
Speaker:So what you're talking about,
Speaker:go seek some resources from your community who can help you
Speaker:confirm and verify if you will,
Speaker:what your idea is.
Speaker:And then also help suggest next steps.
Speaker:So that was great information for us,
Speaker:Debra. All right.
Speaker:Now, going along with the law of attraction,
Speaker:which is what we kind of been talking about through all
Speaker:of this,
Speaker:I'd like to present you with a virtual gift,
Speaker:it's a magical box containing unlimited possibilities for your future.
Speaker:So this is your dream or your goal of almost unreachable
Speaker:Heights that you would wish to obtain.
Speaker:Please accept this gift and open it in our presence.
Speaker:I'm kind of thinking there's a car in there,
Speaker:but what else is inside your box?
Speaker:Yeah, the car just popped out.
Speaker:Definitely. What else is there?
Speaker:I do see,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we are going into a girls' spurt now.
Speaker:So I see a larger distribution facility to handle more orders,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:nice and efficient,
Speaker:like a win-win perfect fit for both.
Speaker:Maybe it's an existing distribution company or we'll be able to
Speaker:create a new spot,
Speaker:but it's in nature and it supports my marketing and production.
Speaker:And I see that I,
Speaker:and I see a couple markets opening up or I can
Speaker:help more people kind of picture two or three sprays.
Speaker:So it would really help a lot of people and get
Speaker:out there in a really big way.
Speaker:So that would really be a great gift to get that
Speaker:in place,
Speaker:to expand the business.
Speaker:I would love that.
Speaker:See that Deborah,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:just like you're talking about how the market is opening up,
Speaker:because that is what is so big right now.
Speaker:So, so exciting.
Speaker:And I think you're right with your dream is that the
Speaker:challenge is going to be,
Speaker:how do you keep up with demand?
Speaker:A bigger distribution center in nature.
Speaker:Sounds perfect.
Speaker:Yeah. Having marketing support too.
Speaker:I can,
Speaker:I did get a new marketer.
Speaker:She came in and when you call out for that,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I'm ready to have,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we have part-time people that help,
Speaker:but I'm really ready to have just more of a full-time
Speaker:team. Yeah.
Speaker:Sounds so exciting.
Speaker:And I'm going to be watching and seeing how you progress.
Speaker:I know it's going to be really fabulous.
Speaker:You've already mentioned if our listeners want to get in touch
Speaker:with your product or you you've talked about the two Facebook
Speaker:pages already and also your website,
Speaker:of course.
Speaker:Can we order right from the website?
Speaker:Yes. It's www.earth,
Speaker:wind flowers.com.
