But first I want to dive into a topic that is

Have you been hearing about it more and more to email

marketing? There is more attention being given to this now more

than ever,

because lots of social media platforms are changing.

Everyone's kind of wondering what's going on.

And email marketing ends up being the place where you have

Speaker:

the most stability.

Speaker:

That's what we're going to talk about specifically,

how to start an email marketing program.

Speaker:

I've been finding within gift biz breeze,

my Facebook group,

but that's always a big question.

Speaker:

You know,

there's other questions around email marketing,

but the biggest obstacle is,

as it is,

Speaker:

I guess,

Speaker:

with lots of things is just getting started.

You might have thought about sending out emails to attract people

Speaker:

to your business and to stay in touch.

Speaker:

And if you are doing it already a huge high five,

Speaker:

because I think it's going to become more and more important

Speaker:

as we go on.

Speaker:

And if you haven't ever thought about it before,

Speaker:

it's important to start thinking about it and get started.

Speaker:

And that is my goal here for you is to understand

Speaker:

why I'm saying it's so important.

Speaker:

And then the very simple steps you need to take to

Speaker:

get going.

Speaker:

The first thing is why.

Speaker:

And the biggest,

Speaker:

most significant thing is you now have control over being able

Speaker:

to communicate with people that you have started to interact with,

Speaker:

who would possibly be interested in buying a product from you.

Speaker:

Maybe they aren't ready to buy right away.

Speaker:

Maybe they already have bought.

Speaker:

Maybe there are people that you run into in networking meetings.

Speaker:

There are so many different ways that we run into people.

Speaker:

And if you're able to collect their email,

Speaker:

this is one asset.

Speaker:

I'll say that you own,

Speaker:

that will allow you to be in control of being able

Speaker:

to communicate with people further.

Speaker:

It really is a powerful asset for your business.

Speaker:

And if ever you were to get to a point or

Speaker:

you hear about other people who are looking at selling their

Speaker:

businesses, an email list is worth money.

Speaker:

It adds to the value of your business.

Speaker:

For that reason,

Speaker:

you have a list of people,

Speaker:

list of contacts,

Speaker:

customers, and prospect who have raised their hand and voiced interest

Speaker:

in you in the past.

Speaker:

Also going along the lines of being a powerful asset,

Speaker:

we need to always remember that when people intercept with us

Speaker:

for the first time,

Speaker:

they are not always in a position where they have a

Speaker:

need or are interested in buying.

Speaker:

Yet you have someone might go from a Facebook post that

Speaker:

you have over to your website,

Speaker:

love what you have there,

Speaker:

but just not be in the market to buy yet.

Speaker:

Or their child just falls and skins his knee or a

Speaker:

husband is intercepting you and saying they need something.

Speaker:

Or there's some other disruption you've got to go cook dinner.

Speaker:

And if that person leaves your website and doesn't for sure

Speaker:

remember what your name was or know how to get back

Speaker:

to you,

Speaker:

that interested they might've started could be lost forever.

Speaker:

But if you have something on your website that can attract

Speaker:

them in and entice them to leave their email,

Speaker:

then you're able to talk with them further.

Speaker:

You're able to remind them of your site and they can

Speaker:

then come back and look at you when they're ready to

Speaker:

buy craft shows.

Speaker:

Same thing.

Speaker:

I see this all the time.

Speaker:

In fact,

Speaker:

I was just at a craft show this past weekend.

Speaker:

And very few people take advantage of this.

Speaker:

How many people do you interact with?

Speaker:

And like,

Speaker:

we'll walk past a booth that you have network meetings,

Speaker:

the same thing,

Speaker:

same type of a concept,

Speaker:

but I'm going to stick with craft shows.

Speaker:

For my example here,

Speaker:

depending on the craft show,

Speaker:

it could be hundreds of people.

Speaker:

If you were able to collect emails from even only a

Speaker:

small percentage of those people,

Speaker:

there are people that you can then continue to talk to

Speaker:

on a semi-regular basis who might not be ready to buy

Speaker:

right? When they saw you at the show,

Speaker:

but had a good interaction with you.

Speaker:

You were friendly at the booth,

Speaker:

they got a chance to see your product.

Speaker:

They just didn't hand over their credit card and buy right

Speaker:

now, but maybe they're going to be ready in a month

Speaker:

or two months.

Speaker:

And if you let them walk away from your booth without

Speaker:

getting their email again,

Speaker:

it's like poof,

Speaker:

all of that energy of having the show,

Speaker:

the only value is in the people who are actually purchasing

Speaker:

at the show where really it can be so much more

Speaker:

than that when you collect the emails.

Speaker:

And then of course customers,

Speaker:

I'm not going to make any assumptions,

Speaker:

but hopefully you are collecting emails from people who buy from

Speaker:

you because also common thing at craft shows,

Speaker:

people just,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

exchange the money,

Speaker:

put a product in the bag,

Speaker:

say, thank you so much for the business.

Speaker:

Maybe put a card in there,

Speaker:

but then you're leaving the onus on that person to call

Speaker:

you up.

Speaker:

Or if you put a card in your boxes,

Speaker:

when you ship things out,

Speaker:

all of the potential reconnection is on their end.

Speaker:

Not your end.

Speaker:

If it,

Speaker:

if you get their email,

Speaker:

you're able to initiate it.

Speaker:

So these are all the reasons why email marketing can be

Speaker:

such a huge asset to your business.

Speaker:

And when you're not doing this,

Speaker:

you are truly 100% leaving dollars on the table.

Speaker:

So I don't think I need to drive that point home

Speaker:

any further,

Speaker:

but now let's get into the big stumbling block that I

Speaker:

see, which is how it sounds nice,

Speaker:

but that's intimidating.

Speaker:

There's a lot of other things you need to do for

Speaker:

your business.

Speaker:

So here are the steps to take.

Speaker:

When you're looking to put an email marketing campaign in place,

Speaker:

first thing,

Speaker:

pick an email server and don't get stuck here.

Speaker:

There are so many available.

Speaker:

This doesn't have to be a final decision.

Speaker:

I'm going to say,

Speaker:

go with a couple of the easier ones,

Speaker:

constant contact MailChimp.

Speaker:

Maybe we'll get some feedback from people who are here,

Speaker:

who are going to be doing the showcases later.

Speaker:

And they'll tell you what platforms they're on.

Speaker:

If they're willing to share,

Speaker:

the point is get started.

Speaker:

Don't spend a ton of time researching a million places,

Speaker:

pick one and just get started.

Speaker:

You can always export your customer list and send it over

Speaker:

to another service provider.

Speaker:

If at some point you decide you don't want to stay

Speaker:

with who you've picked.

Speaker:

So the first thing is picking your service provider.

Speaker:

I'm going to suggest MailChimp seems to be the one that's

Speaker:

the most popular right now,

Speaker:

but I have used constant contact in the past also.

Speaker:

And they're pretty easy to do.

Speaker:

They both have free plans for you to get started with

Speaker:

so no excuses there.

Speaker:

The one thing you absolutely should not do is try to

Speaker:

send emails from like a free Gmail account that you have

Speaker:

or a Yahoo account that you have.

Speaker:

And the reason is a couple of things.

Speaker:

First off,

Speaker:

it doesn't have any of the legal things in place for

Speaker:

you. Have you seen when you get emails on the bottom,

Speaker:

it says,

Speaker:

click here.

Speaker:

If you want to unsubscribe,

Speaker:

that is something legally you need to have when you're sending

Speaker:

out emails and these types of services,

Speaker:

like I was just talking about with MailChimp and constant contact

Speaker:

and any of the other ones that you would use automatically

Speaker:

have that in there for you.

Speaker:

When you set up your account,

Speaker:

it'll automatically be added to the end of the email.

Speaker:

So you've got that cover.

Speaker:

Another thing about trying to send from like a free email

Speaker:

account is if you start sending too many,

Speaker:

I think you could maybe send maybe 10 or 20 at

Speaker:

a time.

Speaker:

If you dare risk it,

Speaker:

but you start sending too many and they're going to see

Speaker:

exactly what you're doing,

Speaker:

knowing that it's illegal and block you.

Speaker:

Okay? So you could lose access to your email.

Speaker:

So careful,

Speaker:

careful don't do that.

Speaker:

Just go with the new email service provider.

Speaker:

It's better in every single way that I could talk about.

Speaker:

And like I said,

Speaker:

you can always change later.

Speaker:

So that's number one,

Speaker:

choose an email provider,

Speaker:

sign up for the free account.

Speaker:

Now you're ready to go.

Speaker:

The next thing is collecting emails.

Speaker:

The first thing I do just to get comfortable with the

Speaker:

system is add some emails from your friends and family.

Speaker:

Now it is true that you need permission from them to

Speaker:

add them to your list,

Speaker:

but friends and family,

Speaker:

aren't going to be yelling and screaming and mark you as

Speaker:

spam, right?

Speaker:

So you can clearly add them to start getting the system

Speaker:

up and running.

Speaker:

When you put something on your website that talks about collecting

Speaker:

email addresses,

Speaker:

it always says there's always an opt-in box.

Speaker:

So they're giving you permission just by way of providing you

Speaker:

with their address.

Speaker:

If you're face-to-face at a craft show,

Speaker:

for example,

Speaker:

let's say you do a sweepstakes for a free birthday cake.

Speaker:

Kim, I'm going to say birthday cake with you.

Speaker:

And you're letting people drop their emails in.

Speaker:

As long as you say,

Speaker:

they're enter into the sweepstakes by doing so.

Speaker:

It was allowing me to communicate with you further with promotions

Speaker:

and other such.

Speaker:

You say something that's a value to them,

Speaker:

but you make sure to say that then illegally,

Speaker:

you can add them in.

Speaker:

Also if they're already a customer,

Speaker:

if they've purchased from you,

Speaker:

you are already doing a business transaction.

Speaker:

So you then can legally use their address also.

Speaker:

So all of those things are important in terms of permission.

Speaker:

And then like I was just saying,

Speaker:

start collecting email addresses everywhere.

Speaker:

Is everyone going to be willing to give you an address?

Speaker:

No, that's fine.

Speaker:

If you collect 30,

Speaker:

40 addresses from a craft show,

Speaker:

that's 30 or 40 people that you would've never been able

Speaker:

to talk to again,

Speaker:

if you didn't have email,

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

there's a lot of people.

Speaker:

So think about that at networking meetings.

Speaker:

One of the things we started doing at the ribbon print

Speaker:

company is when we go out to trade shows,

Speaker:

I don't care about the number of email addresses or business

Speaker:

cards we get.

Speaker:

I care about the quality of the emails or the business

Speaker:

cards. So that's another thing like you don't have to just

Speaker:

be filling up like an email list of a hundred people

Speaker:

is no better than an email list of 50 people.

Speaker:

If those 50 people are really qualified,

Speaker:

interested candidates,

Speaker:

right? So it's not always the number.

Speaker:

It's good people signing up.

Speaker:

People who stop at your booth at a craft show.

Speaker:

Yes, don't put everybody in who went to a chamber meeting

Speaker:

of yours.

Speaker:

If you think half of them are going to be interested

Speaker:

in your product,

Speaker:

it's not worth it.

Speaker:

You don't need to go through that effort.

Speaker:

But if you have any questions on that,

Speaker:

I can talk about that again a little bit more at

Speaker:

the end,

Speaker:

but so you start collecting emails on a website.

Speaker:

You often see pop up boxes for 10% off your first

Speaker:

order. You know,

Speaker:

that type of a thing you can certainly do that.

Speaker:

You can also just say,

Speaker:

get on my special list.

Speaker:

So you're the first to know about whatever or get on

Speaker:

my list and you'll have input into the next flavors or

Speaker:

the next sense or whatever's going on with your business.

Speaker:

The one thing I would suggest you stay away from is

Speaker:

saying, join my newsletter.

Speaker:

You know,

Speaker:

most people are not interested or attracted to that.

Speaker:

What's a newsletter.

Speaker:

I'm giving you my email.

Speaker:

You're going to send me things to buy.

Speaker:

Everyone's kind of conditioned to that already.

Speaker:

So if you can entice them with,

Speaker:

including something else that they're going to get that they're going

Speaker:

to be like,

Speaker:

yeah, I want to know about that.

Speaker:

Then you're more likely to get the email addresses.

Speaker:

Okay. So that's step two.

Speaker:

Then the third step,

Speaker:

which gets to be a little bit more of a sophisticated

Speaker:

step, but it's easiest to do when you're just starting is

Speaker:

to start tagging emails.

Speaker:

And by that,

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

if they're a customer,

Speaker:

add a tag,

Speaker:

you learn how to do that.

Speaker:

Based on the email service provider you have,

Speaker:

but everyone now allows you to make subsets of your master

Speaker:

list based on what I'm going to call tat.

Speaker:

Some people call them different things.

Speaker:

So the easiest and most obvious tag is customers,

Speaker:

not customers,

Speaker:

right? So you could send an email to somebody and say,

Speaker:

thank you so much in the past for your support,

Speaker:

wanting to make sure that you were the first to know,

Speaker:

blah, blah,

Speaker:

blah, blah,

Speaker:

blah, blah,

Speaker:

blah. If your emails weren't tagged,

Speaker:

you don't know who's a past customer and who isn't.

Speaker:

Right. So tagging is really great in that way.

Speaker:

You could also tag based on people who come to trade

Speaker:

shows because you know,

Speaker:

then they're local probably right.

Speaker:

If you're doing local craft shows.

Speaker:

So then you could send emails just to that subset of

Speaker:

your list saying,

Speaker:

Hey, I'm going to be at SpringHill mall next Saturday,

Speaker:

come join me.

Speaker:

If you do,

Speaker:

and say the word peppermint I'll have something special at the

Speaker:

booth for you,

Speaker:

things like that.

Speaker:

You have fun with them and play with them like that.

Speaker:

Okay. So in summary,

Speaker:

these three steps in terms of how to get started with

Speaker:

your email list is first picking a service provider.

Speaker:

Second, starting to add into the emails into that system and

Speaker:

then tag them even in the most simplistic way,

Speaker:

because all you're trying to do right now is get into

Speaker:

the sync and understanding the whole email process.

Speaker:

Okay. And you can get fancier later if you want.

Speaker:

I want you to get into the process.

Speaker:

Okay? So those are the three steps to get started.

Speaker:

Then none of this means anything,

Speaker:

unless you start sending out emails,

Speaker:

right? It doesn't matter how much you have in the back.

Speaker:

If you're not using an actually communicating with them.

Speaker:

So what I would do here is just decide on and

Speaker:

commit to some type of a frequency I would do at

Speaker:

the least monthly.

Speaker:

I feel like that's a little bit too little,

Speaker:

but look,

Speaker:

if that's what you can do,

Speaker:

and that's what you feel you can commit to get started

Speaker:

with that monthly or every other week or weekly.

Speaker:

I don't think as smaller brands,

Speaker:

like we all are,

Speaker:

you need to be doing every day or multiple times a

Speaker:

week. I don't know about you guys,

Speaker:

but I have some brands that I've been following.

Speaker:

And especially since my son just got married,

Speaker:

I was purchasing regularly from a couple of them.

Speaker:

And they send me stuff like almost every single day,

Speaker:

but they're a big brand.

Speaker:

They have the power behind them to do that.

Speaker:

I'm getting a little irritated.

Speaker:

I'm not even opening them anymore.

Speaker:

So it's just a little bit too much.

Speaker:

And especially a smaller brand.

Speaker:

You don't want people to opt out or unsubscribe.

Speaker:

So that's what I'm saying weekly over your other week at

Speaker:

the very least monthly you should do.

Speaker:

So then what do you say in these emails?

Speaker:

Okay. That's the next thing I'll tell you the easiest thing

Speaker:

to do here.

Speaker:

If you have Gmail,

Speaker:

you know how they're on the very right side is the

Speaker:

promotion folder.

Speaker:

Click on that and see what headlines,

Speaker:

what subject lines interests you,

Speaker:

what prompts you and makes you interested in opening.

Speaker:

You can pretty much copy,

Speaker:

substitute out some of those subject line words and use those

Speaker:

for your emails.

Speaker:

You don't have to sit here with a blank piece of

Speaker:

paper thinking,

Speaker:

oh my gosh,

Speaker:

what am I going to say?

Speaker:

What am I going to say?

Speaker:

Right. It can also give you ideas for content to put

Speaker:

in your emails.

Speaker:

So I see that as a great wealth of idea prompts

Speaker:

for your subject line.

Speaker:

And then when you're getting into your email,

Speaker:

obviously the content needs to follow whatever you're saying in the

Speaker:

subject line.

Speaker:

But for the most part,

Speaker:

you're looking at obviously a product,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

you might talk about something that's new,

Speaker:

or you might be promoting a special product that relates to

Speaker:

an upcoming holiday.

Speaker:

Potentially. I love the idea for,

Speaker:

again, us as small business owners to give some type of

Speaker:

a personal look into the business,

Speaker:

whether you show a picture of,

Speaker:

Hey, here's what I was working on this week.

Speaker:

And you show you pouring soaps or someone delivering the flower

Speaker:

part of the cake or a gift basket or whatever it

Speaker:

is so that they start to feel like they know you.

Speaker:

The big brands have spent millions of dollars in advertising,

Speaker:

developing a persona,

Speaker:

a theme,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

the business,

Speaker:

et cetera.

Speaker:

We're smaller businesses.

Speaker:

So the best way that we can do that and get

Speaker:

people to feel like they really know us is by sharing

Speaker:

a little bit of something personal in the emails.

Speaker:

Doesn't have to be long.

Speaker:

One of the things,

Speaker:

and you'll love this.

Speaker:

One of the things we have found recently is people like

Speaker:

shorter emails,

Speaker:

not longer,

Speaker:

which means you don't have to be writing a ton of

Speaker:

words. You know,

Speaker:

just something little to get your message across couple of photos,

Speaker:

especially if you have products links to the product,

Speaker:

not just to your overall website,

Speaker:

but the specific product that you're looking at are really important.

Speaker:

And great idea is if you want to,

Speaker:

and you don't necessarily need to do this with every email,

Speaker:

but ask your email recipients a question,

Speaker:

Hey, if I were to create these scarves in a new

Speaker:

color for the fall,

Speaker:

which of these three colors,

Speaker:

would you resonate with the most?

Speaker:

Or which one do you think I should do?

Speaker:

Just hit the reply button and let me know which color.

Speaker:

And of course you can apply that to all different types

Speaker:

of things.

Speaker:

When you do this,

Speaker:

it does two things.

this wrong at some of our trade shows,

when we did this for a little while,

we let people enter their email address and we did a

drawing for a free ribbon printer.

So we were giving away a thousand dollar printer for free,

in a collection of all those addresses.

Now, granted it was a trade show.

So it was all business people.

But I got to tell you,

we went back and tracked none of the winners,

except for a couple of the shows were more connected with

customers. None of those shows where we gave away those printers.

I'm going to say there were three of them ever use

their printer.

They saw no value in it.

What they were doing is going around and they saw,

oh, I don't even know what I'm signing up for.

I'm going to write my name and put my email address.

And I don't know,

Anyway, there was no real correlation to what they were winning

and the value of it.

So we stopped doing that once we figured that out.
