I think there was a point in my late twenties where

I wasn't unhappy with my life,

Speaker:

but I thought I could do something else.

Speaker:

I thought I could do something bigger.

And I was working in corporate America and I was recently

Speaker:

married and I wanted a family,

Speaker:

but I also wanted a career and I felt not confused,

Speaker:

but just kind of going along with the motions.

Speaker:

So I started learning more about online business and it inspired

Speaker:

me to make changes that ultimately spurred me to creating my

Speaker:

dream life.

Speaker:

So now I am a work at home.

Speaker:

Mom, I have a toddler,

Speaker:

my husband and I moved.

Speaker:

We're kind of building and renovating our dream home.

Speaker:

And a lot of what I had wanted manifested for me,

Speaker:

It sounds like you didn't have too many questions about whether

Speaker:

you wanted to go for,

Speaker:

it sounds like you're a risk taker.

Speaker:

I'm definitely a risk taker.

Speaker:

And I think another one of my favorite quotes is a

Speaker:

hundred percent of the shots you don't take.

Speaker:

Don't go in by Wayne Gretzky.

And I've always tried to just put myself out there and

Speaker:

take chances.

Speaker:

And I think the biggest skill that I learned was just

Speaker:

push away any embarrassment that you might feel about pursuing your

Speaker:

dream. And I think for a lot of sellers,

Speaker:

we feel kind of weird sometimes pursuing this new identity as

Speaker:

a seller,

Speaker:

telling our family and friends about our business.

Speaker:

Particularly if we're in other areas of our life where people

Speaker:

think of us as one way.

Speaker:

And I had to push past all of those feelings to

Speaker:

kind of really go after what I wanted.

Speaker:

And now that I did,

Speaker:

I'm so grateful that I took those steps to do so.

Speaker:

So what would you say to somebody who's listening right now?

Speaker:

Who says,

yeah, yeah,

but that's her,

this is me.

I'm scared.

I don't know if I have what it takes.

I definitely feel those feelings still and I've been there,

but if you ultimately want the life of your dreams,

you have to push past that and start making those steps

now. And it might look like a small thing that you

Speaker:

do every single week.

Speaker:

You don't become a millionaire overnight.

Speaker:

You don't change completely who you are overnight,

Speaker:

but I think just strong belief in what could be in

Speaker:

yourself is what ultimately will help you push past that.

Speaker:

And that ties into your quote as well.

Speaker:

So I think so often we take ourselves so seriously.

Speaker:

And what we're doing here is not a life or death

Speaker:

thing. It can reap so many rewards for us,

Speaker:

both personally and financially,

Speaker:

but it's worth taking these chances.

Speaker:

You're not putting your life on the line.

Speaker:

You might be putting what you think is your ego on

Speaker:

the line,

Speaker:

but whatever happens no matter what,

Speaker:

the results you'll be able to work through it.

So you can make adjustments.

Speaker:

And when you have direction and help,

Speaker:

like what we're providing you today,

it is much easier.

You don't have to do things alone.

You've talked with me a little bit already in the pre-chat

that you had an Etsy shop.

Speaker:

So let's talk a little bit about that experience as we

Speaker:

move into today.

Speaker:

So back in 2017,

Speaker:

I was listening to tons of podcasts about starting an Etsy

Speaker:

shop. And I still felt clueless about what I actually wanted

Speaker:

to make and list.

Speaker:

So I had been attending a bunch of bachelorette parties at

Speaker:

the time,

Speaker:

and I was still in my late twenties then.

Speaker:

And I knew that people would attend these parties and they

Speaker:

would shell out $40,

Speaker:

easy to the maid of honor to buy some trinkets shirts,

Speaker:

do dads that were more throwaway items.

Speaker:

To me,

Speaker:

that sounded like a good niche.

Speaker:

Since when people are also buying for bachelorette parties,

Speaker:

they typically buy in bulk.

Speaker:

It's not like one gift that they're giving someone that they're

Speaker:

buying enough for the whole group,

Speaker:

which could be like 20 girls.

Speaker:

I thought strategically,

Speaker:

this is the right niche for me to be in,

Speaker:

but I'm not necessarily a crafty person.

Speaker:

So I decided to have temporary tattoos manufactured where I was

Speaker:

the designer and I made the designs in Canva.

Speaker:

And for those of you that haven't attended a bachelorette party

Speaker:

recently beyond wearing matching shirts,

Speaker:

it's often customed to where the bride's new name or some

Speaker:

other fun saying about bachelorette parties on your wrist,

Speaker:

on your face with these tattoos.

Speaker:

So all in all,

Speaker:

it was an awesome business for me on Etsy.

Speaker:

And it worked out where I would have an average order

Speaker:

size of like 15 or $20 and the tattoos were pennies

Speaker:

to get manufactured,

Speaker:

but it was just too much with my life in corporate

Speaker:

America. I didn't get a sale every day.

Speaker:

So I felt that kind of mental load of needing to

Speaker:

check the app,

Speaker:

making sure that I was getting the orders out on time,

Speaker:

making sure I manage my inventory because I didn't know upfront

Speaker:

which designs would sell,

Speaker:

which wouldn't.

Speaker:

So I kind of guessed and over time I learned,

Speaker:

but it just became something that I started out excited about,

Speaker:

but then it became a little bit of a load,

Speaker:

even though it was profitable.

Speaker:

So that's when I was looking for something else with my

Speaker:

Etsy Shop.

Speaker:

So you were liking the platform and that was working for

Speaker:

you, but you just decided you needed to tweak what you

Speaker:

were going to be offering.

Speaker:

Yes. Which is a perfect example of what we were just

Speaker:

talking about a minute ago,

Speaker:

that when you start something,

Speaker:

it doesn't mean that you can't make changes and tweaks along

Speaker:

the way,

Speaker:

which is exactly what you're demonstrating here.

Speaker:

So what did you transition into,

Speaker:

how did you make an adjustment to make it really work

Speaker:

for you?

Speaker:

Well, I went to a conference completely by myself,

Speaker:

which was another one of my,

Speaker:

just take a risk,

Speaker:

try not to be uncomfortable or push past any uncomfortable feelings

Speaker:

that I have.

Speaker:

So I went by myself,

Speaker:

I had,

Speaker:

my husband dropped me off and I'm standing in line for

Speaker:

lunch at the food truck.

Speaker:

And I started up one of those awkward conversations with the

Speaker:

woman next to me.

Speaker:

Hey, what taco are you gonna order?

Speaker:

Oh, this one looks good.

Speaker:

And then we ended up chatting and she told me about

Speaker:

selling digital downloads on Etsy and on her website.

Speaker:

And I found out that she was a six-figure seller with

Speaker:

this concept of selling digital downloads.

Speaker:

So after the conference,

Speaker:

it kind of blew my mind that the things that I

Speaker:

was worried about on Etsy,

Speaker:

like not keeping up with my orders and inventory shipping,

Speaker:

I could just erase those problems and focus on putting out

Speaker:

a product and essentially letting the customer kind of take it

Speaker:

from there.

Speaker:

And that was the beginning of the digital downloads Etsy experience

Speaker:

for me.

Speaker:

Wonderful and share with us a little bit on a tactical

Speaker:

end, what steps you then took to get this set up

Speaker:

for yourself on that T?

Speaker:

Sure. So I think the biggest thing is what is a

Speaker:

digital download or printable?

Speaker:

A lot of you have seen them,

Speaker:

but you might not actually know that you could sell them,

Speaker:

but what they are are digital files that you make on

Speaker:

your computer,

Speaker:

that the customer can download from Etsy without further action from

Speaker:

you. So they can be things like scavenger hunts,

Speaker:

which I sell for bachelorette parties.

Speaker:

They're printable letter size,

Speaker:

scavenger hunts.

Speaker:

They could be printable games or coloring pages for your kids

Speaker:

for the holidays.

Speaker:

It could be something that someone never prints like a social

Speaker:

media template for an entrepreneur,

Speaker:

even Etsy branding templates.

Speaker:

So for the concept of the customer,

Speaker:

they download the file.

Speaker:

And then the work that you have to do is really

Speaker:

just answering questions if they have any and not everyone has

Speaker:

questions and it depends on how user-friendly you make the product.

Speaker:

Okay. And then how are you getting the content for the

Speaker:

digital downloads?

Speaker:

Are you creating those all yourself?

Speaker:

Yes. And I'm not a graphic designer and I'm not a

Speaker:

very creative person.

Speaker:

I don't have an eye for it.

Speaker:

Let's just say that.

Speaker:

But I still was able to put together design.

Speaker:

Some of my best-selling designs have made over $2,000

Speaker:

in, I call it quote,

Speaker:

unquote, passive income.

Speaker:

Nothing is truly passive income,

Speaker:

but it's as close to it as I can get on

Speaker:

Etsy. And you're doing it through Canva.

Speaker:

Yes. So I'm creating the designs in canva.com,

Speaker:

which is an online graphic design tool.

Speaker:

It's super easy.

Speaker:

I started out with the canvas free version,

Speaker:

but then at some point I upgraded to pro just for

Speaker:

ease of use.

Speaker:

And I do you,

Speaker:

one thing need to know about selling printables.

Speaker:

You can't just use canvas templates or graphics or fonts.

Speaker:

You can't use all of them.

Speaker:

You have to make sure only use the ones that are

Speaker:

okay for commercial use.

Speaker:

So to kind of avoid that trouble,

Speaker:

I buy them from other websites like design bundles or font

Speaker:

bundles, and I'll get packets of cute clip art and fonts

Speaker:

that I can use for like 10 bucks.

Speaker:

I have those forever for whatever you're going to create.

Speaker:

And so then you're actually putting all of that together with

Speaker:

whatever that downloadable it's going to look like.

Speaker:

Yep. So your work is really just understanding what size to

Speaker:

make the printable and CAMBA and then arranging the clip art

Speaker:

and the fonts to look cute enough that someone would want

Speaker:

to buy it.

Speaker:

Perfect. Okay.

Speaker:

And so when someone has a shop set up like this,

Speaker:

what does a Workday look like?

Speaker:

What are the tasks that you're doing?

Speaker:

Because you're not making another product unless you're creating something new

Speaker:

as a download.

Speaker:

Yeah. So to give you an idea,

Speaker:

this is still a side hustle for me.

Speaker:

And it brings in over a thousand dollars per month in

Speaker:

Etsy revenue.

Speaker:

This year,

Speaker:

I moved 3000 miles cross country with my family.

Speaker:

So I didn't put one listing up for six months and

Speaker:

didn't do anything except for answer customer questions.

Speaker:

And I still kept the over thousand dollars in revenue.

Speaker:

It's passive income quote unquote,

Speaker:

because at one point I made those designs.

Speaker:

And if someone asked me a question,

Speaker:

I answer it.

Speaker:

But beyond that,

Speaker:

I don't have a daily to-do list,

Speaker:

which is why I wanted to switch to downloads in the

Speaker:

first place,

Speaker:

because that daily to-do list,

Speaker:

even if it only took me 10 minutes previously,

Speaker:

when I was selling tattoos,

Speaker:

it was just too much mentally.

Speaker:

Cause I have a million things to keep track of.

Speaker:

Now that I have a kid and I felt like I

Speaker:

was dropping the ball,

Speaker:

which perfectionist me didn't like that feeling.

Speaker:

Right. Well,

Speaker:

and just to make sure that everybody understands like there's no

Speaker:

shipping involved or anything,

Speaker:

when you go and you make a purchase,

Speaker:

it downloads to you.

Speaker:

So Julia is not doing anything other than catching the orders,

Speaker:

answering any questions that you have,

Speaker:

et cetera,

Speaker:

and creating new designs.

Speaker:

Would that be accurate?

Speaker:

That's it,

Speaker:

that's all that I do.

Speaker:

It sounds a little bit magical.

Speaker:

It is a little bit magical,

honestly. And I think you mentioned that one of my students

Speaker:

has made $150,000.

Speaker:

Honestly, she makes me jealous sometimes because imagine if I didn't

Speaker:

take six months off and I actually put tons of effort

Speaker:

into the shop,

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

what could be possible with this?

Speaker:

It's truly amazing.

Speaker:

And it's fun.

Speaker:

I think a lot of us start Etsy shops.

Speaker:

Cause we like to show that little creative side of ourselves

Speaker:

in our pockets of time.

Speaker:

We think it's fun to do this stuff.

Speaker:

So that's what I love about digital downloads.

Speaker:

It's that same kind of creative flow that you get into.

Speaker:

You're just making it on your computer.

Speaker:

Well, and you're also able to ebb and flow with your

Speaker:

lifestyle. Like if you find a time,

Speaker:

a point in life where you could spend more time,

Speaker:

you can make more downloads or you can just,

Speaker:

as you were just describing with your past year leave,

Speaker:

what's there let that work for you for the time being.

Speaker:

So a lot of ability to be flexible as need be.

Speaker:

And especially as a young mom,

Speaker:

so that I think pique some interest for some people who

Speaker:

are listening,

Speaker:

who are in a similar situation,

Speaker:

let's talk a little bit more about at sea and I'm

Speaker:

thinking one other thing that is an important thing to do

Speaker:

is somehow be promoting your Etsy shop.

Speaker:

Yep, totally.

Speaker:

And I think for me,

Speaker:

I started off on the Pinterest train and I would pin

Speaker:

all of my items.

Speaker:

I would create new pins.

Speaker:

I'm a huge canvas person.

Speaker:

So I would create new pins in CAMBA to essentially drive

Speaker:

traffic to my shop.

Speaker:

I am a former blogger.

Speaker:

So I would create blog posts about bachelorette parties and then

Speaker:

use that to drive traffic to my shop.

Speaker:

Okay. Beautiful.

Speaker:

And we've talked a lot about that on the show already,

Speaker:

Julie, about the advantages of doing pins and how Pinterest has

Speaker:

really changed recently and the value of blog post as well.

Speaker:

So people who are following along with the shows clearly understand

Speaker:

that. What would you say about actually on the Etsy site,

Speaker:

SEO opportunities there,

Speaker:

or how you get found in search on Etsy or promotion

Speaker:

doing Etsy ads.

Speaker:

I've tried all of those.

Speaker:

I think there's one important element that I've learned over the

Speaker:

years that has made all the difference,

Speaker:

make stuff that people want to buy.

Speaker:

You can make something beautiful that you like,

Speaker:

but if it's not popular right now,

Speaker:

it's like running uphill.

Speaker:

But the second that you find something that's in demand or

Speaker:

you make something,

Speaker:

a demand it's like running downhill,

Speaker:

it's so much easier.

Speaker:

You don't have to put all the effort into it.

Speaker:

Of course you want to have a clear title and put

Speaker:

all 13 tags and be somewhat thoughtful about it,

Speaker:

but it really starts way before you even create the product.

Speaker:

So for me,

Speaker:

I have a few tools that I use when I'm going

Speaker:

through my brainstorming process of what to make next.

Speaker:

The first tool is Google trends,

Speaker:

trends dot,

Speaker:

google.com, and that's completely free.

Speaker:

And you can type in various things that have to do

Speaker:

with your Etsy shop.

Speaker:

Some of the main keywords,

Speaker:

the stuff that you make.

Speaker:

And you can see what's trending now and you can play

Speaker:

with the filters to see what's trending last 30 days,

Speaker:

what's trending seasonally over time.

Speaker:

It's kind of a nifty cool tool and that can give

Speaker:

you some ideas of what to make.

Speaker:

Then there's Pinterest trends.

Speaker:

That's also free.

Speaker:

That does the exact same thing.

Speaker:

I do look on Pinterest and Etsy.

Speaker:

I'm sure many of you do to see what other people

Speaker:

are making,

Speaker:

what people are talking about on blogs.

Speaker:

But then I also use some tools like E rank pro

Speaker:

and Uber suggests because I'm coming from a blogging background.

Speaker:

So I kind of love that data to see how many

Speaker:

searches per month.

Speaker:

Something has to understand if it's going to be a hit

Speaker:

or it's going to take more effort on my end to

Speaker:

get this in front of people.

Speaker:

So those are some of the tools that I use to

Speaker:

make sure that the time I'm investing in a product is

Speaker:

going to be worth it for me.

Speaker:

Okay. And I imagine through these tools as well,

Speaker:

you're getting ideas for blog post or different types of ways

Speaker:

that you can communicate what that new principal's going to look

Speaker:

like. Absolutely.

Speaker:

Or How to use it or whatever.

Speaker:

In the bachelorette space,

Speaker:

there's a lot of kind of trendy slang that people use

Speaker:

to describe certain types of parties.

Speaker:

Like the Nashville,

Speaker:

bachelorette is a national RET or a Nash bash.

Speaker:

You kind of have to know how people are describing these

Speaker:

things in order to put the right tags.

Speaker:

So tools like the ones that I described can help you

Speaker:

find those.

Speaker:

If you're not personally in that place,

Speaker:

for example,

Speaker:

I've sort of,

Speaker:

I don't want to say I've aged out of the bachelorettes,

Speaker:

but I'm not going to nearly as many anymore,

Speaker:

particularly with the pandemic.

Speaker:

So I'm not in that target zone where I understand what

Speaker:

to say on the principal naturally.

Speaker:

So I need to use these tools to make sure I

Speaker:

really have it right for the customer.

Speaker:

Okay. I have another question for you when I'm looking at

Speaker:

reels and there are a lot of people who are making

Speaker:

reels, who are makers these days and they're selling printables,

Speaker:

right? So they're selling like the little stickers and all of

Speaker:

that. Are they getting those from a company like yours and

Speaker:

then printing them and selling them locally?

labels and then it's fulfilled by a partner.

but you don't actually have to be the one that's shipping

it. And you'll see a lot of those on,

I was just looking at a shop yesterday,

I'm not a big social media person in general.

And for someone that has my online business,

most of our traffic is coming in through organic,

through a word of mouth from referrals and affiliates.

I spend a lot of time talking with other bloggers in

this space to have leads sent my way,

but I'm not a huge Instagram and tech talk person.

Speaker:

I like checking out those apps and consuming information,

Speaker:

but honestly it's just never been me.

Speaker:

So I haven't put a lot into those channels,

Speaker:

but because I'm coming from a blogger,

Speaker:

I created a niche website that I only write about bachelorette

Speaker:

parties on that site.

Speaker:

And I do get a good deal of traffic from there.

Speaker:

And then I tried hard being clear with my tags and

Speaker:

title on Etsy.

Speaker:

So Etsy's bringing me the majority of the customers.

Speaker:

Okay. So I think you're blowing some people's minds here thinking

Speaker:

that there is a way to be making money and not

Speaker:

be full in on social media.

Speaker:

Absolutely. I know I'll make more if I do,

Speaker:

but I absolutely just can't,

Speaker:

it's one thing that I just can't fit into my day

Speaker:

right now.

Speaker:

I'm hoping I become a different person tomorrow.

Speaker:

Cause I know how important it could be,

Speaker:

particularly on Tik talk and reels as you mentioned,

Speaker:

but I just can't do it.

Speaker:

I can't bring myself to do it Well.

And if what you have going right now is working for

Speaker:

you, then why would you,

Speaker:

you don't need to.

Speaker:

And I love that you're talking about this and not many

Speaker:

people are going that route.

I've talked with one other person who actually runs a brick

and mortar chocolate store who also isn't on social at all.

So it's just another option for how to promote.

Yes, you get to different audiences,

et cetera,

but it is achievable to,

to run a business,

make money without being all in on social,

I guess would be the way to say it.

Right. I think just my biggest thing is that I want

this to fit in my life.

So I'm so optimistic that it can be this magical passive

thing. And I'll pursue that even when it makes me turn

down, opportunities turned down more sales because I have more than

enough on my plate right now.

And I have to continue to keep this manageable or else

I'm going to burn out.

And I think a lot of people can to this,

but this has been a really difficult last few years for

Speaker:

a lot of us.

And those with young kids,

it's just been tough.

So for me,

social would just,

I know it would put me over the edge and I

am smart enough in how I promote in the other spaces.

And I'm okay with the growth being the way it is

I'm thrilled with a thousand a month more passive income.

So it's something that I've sort of accepted as the season

in my life,

maybe five years from now,

this is why we're X for me and my family.

then pretty soon you're going to shut down or you're going

So how much time would you say you devote to both

I had a corporate job.

I was working for a giant tech company.

So I only spent a couple of hours per week and

then my husband and I moved.

And after a while of sort of prioritizing my career,

it's sort of his turn to prioritize his,

so that doesn't necessarily leave a lot of time for my

businesses, but I still have those nap times.

And I just recently got a nanny,

which is giving me two hours per day,

So I would say I probably spend three hours per day

it's definitely not like that.

So there's more than enough room for everyone right now.
