Speaker:Here is your host gift biz gal,
Speaker:Sue Mon Heights.
Speaker:Well, hello and happy.
Speaker:New year,
Speaker:2018. If you're listening to this show,
Speaker:the day it's actually going live,
Speaker:it is new year's and hopefully you have had a wonderful
Speaker:celebration and are as excited and charged up about the possibilities
Speaker:that the new year can bring.
Speaker:As I am.
Speaker:The crossing over into the new year is always a marker
Speaker:in the sand.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:we have an opportunity to reset some of the things that
Speaker:we were doing last year that we might want to change.
Speaker:And of course there are those infamous new year's resolutions that
Speaker:sometimes hold for a short time.
Speaker:And most of the time don't carry through for any more
Speaker:than a month.
Speaker:Well, today I want to talk with you about the power
Speaker:of purpose,
Speaker:and this is something that I incorporated into my life and
Speaker:my business last year,
Speaker:that really helped me realize significant changes.
Speaker:What I want to share with you is how you can
Speaker:make changes in your activity and in the mindset that you
Speaker:have connected with your business to help you achieve those resolutions.
Speaker:So they don't Windle away after a short time and how
Speaker:you can make sure that the activities that you're doing every
Speaker:single day are moving the ball forward towards the goals that
Speaker:you create for your business.
Speaker:I want you to reflect back for just a moment on
Speaker:last year and be really honest with yourself.
Speaker:How did you do,
Speaker:maybe you stretched yourself to new Heights and you saw those
Speaker:results in your sales numbers,
Speaker:or maybe you added something into your business,
Speaker:like a website,
Speaker:or you started doing trade shows or you entered into corporate
Speaker:accounts. And you're super pleased with everything that you've accomplished.
Speaker:If that's the case,
Speaker:high five from me,
Speaker:kudos to you,
Speaker:you are golden,
Speaker:or could you have done better?
Speaker:I don't know if you're like me,
Speaker:but I'm always feeling like I could have done something better.
Speaker:Even if I'm happy with my result.
Speaker:I always feel like I could have done more.
Speaker:I'm always driven to move forward.
Speaker:Or maybe you're someone who was really serious about starting your
Speaker:business last year or doing something specific within your business.
Speaker:But for whatever reason,
Speaker:it got delayed,
Speaker:things just didn't come together.
Speaker:And you're sitting here now at this point,
Speaker:and you didn't achieve what you had set out to do
Speaker:for last year,
Speaker:no matter where you fall in the spectrum.
Speaker:If you're someone who feels that you could have done better,
Speaker:I want you right here and now to forgive yourself,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we always do the best that we can with what we
Speaker:have, the tools that we have,
Speaker:things that we know,
Speaker:people that we've met that have helped us along the way.
Speaker:So I want you right now,
Speaker:no matter what's happened in the past,
Speaker:if you feel like you came up a little short,
Speaker:that's the past.
Speaker:Now it's the future.
Speaker:And I want you to forgive yourself.
Speaker:If you're just feeling like you weren't able to achieve what
Speaker:you wanted to that history does not need to continue and
Speaker:pave the way for the future.
Speaker:You can change everything right here.
Speaker:And right now my strategy will help you to do differently
Speaker:so that you can produce stronger results for next year.
Speaker:What if next year there was no more guessing if what
Speaker:you were doing was the right thing for your business and
Speaker:what if there was no more focusing on the wrong things
Speaker:and wasting time and money,
Speaker:and what if there was no more comparing yourself to others
Speaker:and feeling like you're just not keeping up.
Speaker:I have experienced all of those things.
Speaker:And I've also experienced the challenge of so many things to
Speaker:do for me right now.
Speaker:It's the combination of running two different businesses for you.
Speaker:It could be you have a full-time job and you're trying
Speaker:to start your business on the side,
Speaker:or you've started a business out of a hobby or a
Speaker:craft that you love and you're at home and also raising
Speaker:your children or homeschooling or any number of different types of
Speaker:things that keep vying for our attention and our time.
Speaker:I remember those days.
Speaker:Oh, so well,
Speaker:and I'm sure you can relate to it too.
Speaker:I knew something had to change.
Speaker:And finally,
Speaker:I figured it out.
Speaker:I want to share what I consciously started doing this year
Speaker:that has allowed everything to fall into place.
Speaker:It comes down to having the power of purpose in your
Speaker:business and the power of purpose in your days.
Speaker:I'm not talking about being superficially purposeful.
Speaker:I'm talking about being deeply purposeful.
Speaker:Now this may not make a total sense to you right
Speaker:yet, but it's going to in a second,
Speaker:have you ever been so busy all day that there's just
Speaker:not a minute to spare,
Speaker:but then at the end of the day,
Speaker:when you shut off your computer and you leave your work
Speaker:area, you look back and it's like,
Speaker:I really didn't accomplish that much.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:how was it that I was so busy,
Speaker:but I really didn't accomplish anything.
Speaker:Me too.
Speaker:I've been there until I started using this deuce strategy of
Speaker:mine. And when I did my activity level,
Speaker:bumped up tremendously from podcasts and Facebook lives and hiring in
Speaker:some staff,
Speaker:talking on stage,
Speaker:talking on some online summit,
Speaker:I can just go on and on.
Speaker:And that increase in activity also showed me benefits on the
Speaker:financial spectrum.
Speaker:And not only that let's face it,
Speaker:we all talk as entrepreneurs about having balance.
Speaker:I finally felt this last year for really the first time
Speaker:in a long time that I had some breathing room where
Speaker:I was really enjoying family time out of town,
Speaker:family trips,
Speaker:celebrating weddings and reunions,
Speaker:and a wonderful two-week vacation with my husband.
Speaker:And it was all done not by working more hours,
Speaker:actually, by working less,
Speaker:it comes down to being purposeful with my business and my
Speaker:days. And when I did that,
Speaker:all of my activity was intentional.
Speaker:I was able to filter out distractions and time-wasters,
Speaker:and I was focusing on revenue generating tasks.
Speaker:So I got more done in less time with bigger results.
Speaker:That is what the power of purpose can do for you.
Speaker:You see being busy all day.
Speaker:Doesn't always equate to sales.
Speaker:Let's face it.
Speaker:Everybody has 24 hours in a day.
Speaker:How is it that some people can get so much done
Speaker:and see success in their businesses and other people with the
Speaker:exact same 24 hours,
Speaker:even though their intent is there,
Speaker:aren't able to move forward.
Speaker:I want to start giving you the details of the power
Speaker:of purpose strategy and to make this a little bit easier.
Speaker:I've created a worksheet for you.
Speaker:It's available@giftbizonrap.com
Speaker:forward slash one four,
Speaker:three. It lays out the strategy that I'm going to share
Speaker:with you,
Speaker:and also gives you a place where you can put in
Speaker:your own details.
Speaker:So you can start using this strategy right away.
Speaker:There are two categories that I want to focus on.
Speaker:One is the overall company purposes and the other is the
Speaker:daily task purposes.
Speaker:We're going to dive into the overall company purposes first.
Speaker:And this is something that you do one time for your
Speaker:business. Maybe if you change products,
Speaker:at some point,
Speaker:you might do it twice.
Speaker:But the point is,
Speaker:as your figuring out what your company is all about,
Speaker:these are things you want to get really clear on,
Speaker:right? In the beginning,
Speaker:when we're in my maker's MBA program,
Speaker:this is the very first step.
Speaker:We talk about defining all of this right up front,
Speaker:because it really helps you pave the path for everything that
Speaker:you do as you move forward.
Speaker:So again,
Speaker:we're going to talk about overall company purposes,
Speaker:and this is something that you do one time,
Speaker:and this should live with your company pretty much through its
Speaker:entire life.
Speaker:Now, the overall company purposes are broken into the purpose of
Speaker:your business and the purpose of your product.
Speaker:Let's talk about the purpose of your business first.
Speaker:Now I can hear some of you saying,
Speaker:well, Sue,
Speaker:that's obvious.
Speaker:I want to be in business because I want to make
Speaker:money. Well,
Speaker:I want to challenge that thinking a little bit,
Speaker:because if you are only in business to make money,
Speaker:then when things get tough,
Speaker:when the inevitable obstacles occur,
Speaker:if you don't have a deeper passion than just making money,
Speaker:you are not going to have the strength and determination to
Speaker:move forward.
Speaker:You need to find a deeper purpose for the reason that
Speaker:you're in business.
Speaker:And to demonstrate this,
Speaker:I would like to introduce you to two women who both
Speaker:have a candle company,
Speaker:their names are Jessica and Maria.
Speaker:Now, if they both had just a very superficial purpose,
Speaker:they may say,
Speaker:I love candles and they're fun to make.
Speaker:So I'm thinking I can earn some extra money on the
Speaker:side. You see how that is pretty much a solely financial
Speaker:motivation that is not going to pull them through when they
Speaker:encounter struggles or have challenges in their business.
Speaker:But think of this Jessica's purpose is I want to form
Speaker:some balance in my life while I'm home raising my three
Speaker:children, adult activities and interaction will help keep me sane and
Speaker:makes me feel like I'm contributing financially to the family.
Speaker:So there is of course,
Speaker:a little bit of a financial element,
Speaker:but it's way more about fulfilling her quality of life balance
Speaker:in her life.
Speaker:Being able to bring in an income to the family while
Speaker:also raising children and being stimulated with more adult type activities.
Speaker:Now let's look at Maria.
Speaker:She's in the business for an entirely different reason.
Speaker:She says,
Speaker:I want to start a business now.
Speaker:So I have something to move into when I retire that
Speaker:way, I won't feel lost or without direction.
Speaker:Again, a deeper level of purpose to starting a business,
Speaker:knowing your business,
Speaker:purpose grounds,
Speaker:everything you do as you move forward.
Speaker:So I want you to think right now what yours,
Speaker:if you've already downloaded my worksheet,
Speaker:you can start scribbling notes,
Speaker:right there,
Speaker:jot down thoughts.
Speaker:And I want you to be super honest with yourself.
Speaker:This has nothing to do with something that you're going to
Speaker:put on your website.
Speaker:This is something very personal to you.
Speaker:It could be that you want to be recognized and be
Speaker:proud as a woman,
Speaker:entrepreneur who has their own business.
Speaker:Maybe you secretly or not.
Speaker:So secretly despise your boss and are just tired of the
Speaker:nine to five,
Speaker:where everybody else controls your hours and your activities.
Speaker:Maybe you've been thinking for a long time about starting your
Speaker:own business,
Speaker:and you finally want to do it and prove it to
Speaker:yourself and others that you can turn.
Speaker:What is a hobby into a real business?
Speaker:There are so many reasons to start a business,
Speaker:and I hope I presented to you that it should not
Speaker:be just about making money.
Speaker:There's a deeper purpose and a deeper reason I'll share with
Speaker:you. My business purposes.
Speaker:The reason that I started the ribbon print company is to
Speaker:build and create something that I could sell down the road.
Speaker:Now, any ribbon print customers who are listening,
Speaker:don't start freaking out.
Speaker:I don't look at selling any time in the near future.
Speaker:I'm thinking maybe 15,
Speaker:20 years from now,
Speaker:something like that,
Speaker:but that is my intent and purpose for it to be
Speaker:financially rewarding later while I still love what I'm doing within
Speaker:that business.
Speaker:The reason I started the gift biz brand with this podcast
Speaker:and the courses and all of that is because of the
Speaker:reward that I get.
Speaker:When I hear people coming back to me and telling me
Speaker:that a strategy that I shared with them,
Speaker:or some type of coaching that we did,
Speaker:or a tool that I gave them in some way,
Speaker:I've had an impact and help them grow their business.
Speaker:Personally, for me,
Speaker:that is so rewarding.
Speaker:It makes me feel like apart from my children and my
Speaker:family, which of course is number one,
Speaker:but it makes me feel like I'm doing something useful now.
Speaker:Seriously, that's the reason.
Speaker:And it might seem so superficial and it's not collected with
Speaker:money or anything like that.
Speaker:But that truly is so rewarding to me.
Speaker:And this is a company that when I sell the ribbon
Speaker:print company,
Speaker:it's something that I can still take with me and move
Speaker:forward. I wanted to just share that with you,
Speaker:because it helps again for you to understand the personal level
Speaker:that the business purpose should have for you.
Speaker:So let's move on now to the product purpose.
Speaker:When you think of what you offer,
Speaker:you want to get to the same level that you did
Speaker:with the company purpose.
Speaker:So to continue with the example of our candles,
Speaker:if you were a candle maker,
Speaker:you would not say,
Speaker:Oh, they're pretty.
Speaker:And they smell so good.
Speaker:That's why people should buy them.
Speaker:Doesn't work because there's not enough motivation and individuality.
Speaker:There's not enough that separates you from somebody else who makes
Speaker:candles. But what it could be is something like this.
Speaker:My candles offer unique scent combinations that provide proven relaxing effects,
Speaker:such as calming nerves and invoking peacefulness.
Speaker:When you identify your product's purpose,
Speaker:which is done from the customer's perspective,
Speaker:you now have a differentiating feature that makes your company unique.
Speaker:Again, this does not focus on how much money you're going
Speaker:to make or what the product is.
Speaker:It focuses on the results or the outcome that your customer
Speaker:receives by using your product or your service.
Speaker:This completes the overall company purposes.
Speaker:Again, your business purpose is your deep down in your heart
Speaker:reason why you are starting or already have your own business.
Speaker:And your product purpose is from the customer's perspective.
Speaker:What is it that they achieve or they receive?
Speaker:What is the result or the outcome when they use and
Speaker:purchase your product or your service,
Speaker:if you're an existing business already,
Speaker:I want you to also define this for yourself.
Speaker:It's not just for new businesses.
Speaker:Many people have never actually put on paper or become clear
Speaker:to themselves about the company purpose or their product purpose.
Speaker:And when you do become very clear on these points,
Speaker:this alone is powerful information that ground you,
Speaker:as you move forward,
Speaker:the download could be very handy just to keep this all
Speaker:together for you.
Speaker:You can access that at gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped.com forward slash one 43.
Speaker:I think this is a good place for us all to
Speaker:just stop,
Speaker:take a deep breath and listen to a word from our
Speaker:sponsor. This podcast is made possible.
Speaker:Thanks to the support of the ribbon print company,
Speaker:create custom ribbons,
Speaker:right in your store or craft studio in seconds.
Speaker:Visit the ribbon print company.com
Speaker:for more information.
Speaker:Now let's move on to the daily task purposes.
Speaker:And underneath that,
Speaker:we also have two categories.
Speaker:One is goals,
Speaker:and the other is projects starting with goals.
Speaker:There is a lot of information out there about setting goals
Speaker:for your year.
Speaker:So I'm not going to be going into a lot of
Speaker:that. Now suffice it to say that you should have three
Speaker:overarching goals for a year.
Speaker:In other words,
Speaker:three things that you really want to get accomplished this year.
Speaker:They should be smart goals.
Speaker:Again, you can Google what smart goals are.
Speaker:You want to be very clear and write down what those
Speaker:goals are.
Speaker:The reason is then when you encounter other things that inevitably
Speaker:are going to come up throughout your year,
Speaker:you can analyze whether you should take on new opportunities based
Speaker:on whether they are advancing you towards one of these three
Speaker:goals. So now,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:let's say you have an opportunity to go to a conference.
Speaker:You would ask the question of yourself if by going to
Speaker:this show,
Speaker:is that going to get me further along with one of
Speaker:the goals that I have set for myself for the,
Speaker:if it is then the answer would be,
Speaker:yes, you should go to that conference.
Speaker:But if it's a conference that isn't going to provide you
Speaker:with further information,
Speaker:something that you need right now for this year,
Speaker:that will help you to advance your goal.
Speaker:Then the answer to that should be no.
Speaker:I know people who will go to conferences just for the
Speaker:social part of it.
Speaker:But I would question that in terms of,
Speaker:are you wasting time and wasting money,
Speaker:that precious dollar that you're using to build your business?
Speaker:Is that the right decision for you right now?
Speaker:You can apply this same thinking to such things as starting
Speaker:a blog.
Speaker:Why should you start a blog?
Speaker:Because someone said you should,
Speaker:or because you can tie it into one of your business
Speaker:goals, being very clear on your goals,
Speaker:gives you the groundwork to decide yes or no to things
Speaker:like this.
Speaker:And I want to share with you a theory that one
Speaker:of my podcasts guests gave me,
Speaker:I think this past summer,
Speaker:I can't recall what episode it was right off the top
Speaker:here. But her point was,
Speaker:there are some things that just are not in alignment with
Speaker:what you're doing right now.
Speaker:So you can think of it as there may be something
Speaker:that you really want to do,
Speaker:but it can be done some day,
Speaker:just not today.
Speaker:So I want you to think about that too,
Speaker:as you're going through this coming year,
Speaker:when you have your three goals,
Speaker:and if something comes up that you really,
Speaker:really, really want to do,
Speaker:but it's not in alignment,
Speaker:say to yourself someday,
Speaker:but just not today.
Speaker:This also helps you avoid shiny object syndrome and jumping from
Speaker:one thing to another things that are disconnected from your goals
Speaker:and cause confusion and disruption are wasting precious dollars with no
Speaker:outcome. You want to stay crystal clear on what your three
Speaker:goals for the year are.
Speaker:Then we move on and talk about project purposes.
Speaker:Projects are all those tasks that you do underneath a goal
Speaker:so that you can achieve the goal.
Speaker:These are these little step-by-step pieces that when they build on
Speaker:top of each other,
Speaker:they end up leading you to success.
Speaker:For example,
Speaker:if you had a goal of creating an online shop,
Speaker:some of your projects might be determining what platform to use,
Speaker:what the design and the flow of the content will look
Speaker:like. Who's going to actually do it.
Speaker:And then getting to all the steps of building the site,
Speaker:all of these projects are done through daily work.
Speaker:And this is where things are most likely to fall apart.
Speaker:You know what your goals are and what your individual projects
Speaker:are to reach the goal.
Speaker:But then what happens throughout the day,
Speaker:a girlfriend of yours calls.
Speaker:And she says,
Speaker:Oh, I've got to tell you what just happened this past
Speaker:weekend. And what do you do?
Speaker:You spend an hour and a half on the phone with
Speaker:her hearing all about her weekend or you're in the middle
Speaker:of a project and you get distracted.
Speaker:You say,
Speaker:you know what,
Speaker:I'm starting to get a little bit hungry in this idea
Speaker:of a big fluffy bowl of popcorn looks really good to
Speaker:me right now.
Speaker:Or you hear something on your phone and you see that
Speaker:you have a message and it must be important and you
Speaker:check it out.
Speaker:And then you see that there's some things in Facebook that
Speaker:you might need to look at.
Speaker:So you go from one thing to another and all of
Speaker:a sudden you're watching cat videos and another hour has passed
Speaker:through your day.
Speaker:There are a million things that can take you away.
Speaker:The truth is we create distractions because it's easier to do
Speaker:these things.
Speaker:Then work on the activities that produce results.
Speaker:It's human nature.
Speaker:We can distract ourselves all day long.
Speaker:And I want to repeat this because it's so important to
Speaker:understand we create our own distractions because it's easier to do
Speaker:those things than to work on the activities that will actually
Speaker:produce results.
Speaker:This is why at the end of the day,
Speaker:we've accomplished nothing.
Speaker:Even though we're busy all day long.
Speaker:When you apply the power of purpose daily,
Speaker:you start to focus on the right things,
Speaker:understand the value of the activities that you're doing and you
Speaker:use time and energy to affect Results.
Speaker:Now I bet you're saying,
Speaker:okay, Sue,
Speaker:that sounds all great.
Speaker:But then how do you do it?
Speaker:You've just told me what I need to do,
Speaker:what I need to be looking at the value of all
Speaker:these purposes,
Speaker:but how do I actually do this?
Speaker:I've heard recently that we are exposed to 2000 bits of
Speaker:information every single second.
Speaker:So no surprise that there is such a challenge for us
Speaker:to just stay on task.
Speaker:So what you need to do is periodically I do this
Speaker:about every 30 minutes or so I consciously look at what
Speaker:you're doing and say,
Speaker:am I still on task or did I somehow get off
Speaker:task? Now I've been telling you that I've been using this
Speaker:strategy for a whole year.
Speaker:I've become more conscious and it's becoming more natural for me
Speaker:to stay on task,
Speaker:but I still get sidetracked often.
Speaker:However, what happens is because I'm consciously checking myself every 30
Speaker:minutes or so,
Speaker:I can get myself back on task.
Speaker:I'm not going to say that if your girlfriend calls you
Speaker:and wants to tell you all about her super exciting weekend,
Speaker:that you're not going to talk to her.
Speaker:Of course you are.
Speaker:But in the back of your mind,
Speaker:you can be saying,
Speaker:okay, I get the fact that I'm not still on task.
Speaker:And then maybe you'll limit that conversation to only 15 or
Speaker:20 minutes,
Speaker:not an hour and a half,
Speaker:or if you're in the middle of a really challenging project,
Speaker:you're just,
Speaker:you've hit a roadblock.
Speaker:You're not sure which way to move forward instead of figuring
Speaker:out the right way you think,
Speaker:well, maybe I'll go pour myself another cup of coffee,
Speaker:or maybe it's time for me to have a bathroom break
Speaker:or something like that.
Speaker:I suggest to you that you say,
Speaker:all right,
Speaker:I can do all that.
Speaker:After I moved through this next step,
Speaker:because remember we like to create distractions when things get harder
Speaker:or when there's things that we're less comfortable doing,
Speaker:or don't know how to do this is the way you
Speaker:move your business forward without giving in,
Speaker:to gravitating to those easier projects or just going and taking
Speaker:time on things that really don't advance anything in your business.
Speaker:Even though it's fun,
Speaker:like daydreaming or straightening your shop or doing a little bit
Speaker:of shopping online or watering the plants in your office or
Speaker:more Facebook,
Speaker:what do you think guys?
Speaker:Who's guilty.
Speaker:I'm raising my hand over here.
Speaker:I've done it time and time again.
Speaker:And that's why this strategy is so easy,
Speaker:but so powerful because when you grasp it and when you
Speaker:start implementing intentional checking throughout the day that you're staying on
Speaker:purpose, it is so powerful and will lead you to Results.
Speaker:I've seen it work for me.
Speaker:I have walked out of my office on days,
Speaker:feeling like I have moved forward.
Speaker:I've accomplished what I've needed to accomplish.
Speaker:And my goals are being completed faster in less time because
Speaker:I'm being purposeful with my intentions,
Speaker:my activities,
Speaker:and they're always aligned with what my true goals are.
Speaker:Make yourself a sticky note and put it where you can
Speaker:see it regularly throughout your day or program on your phone.
Speaker:That an alarm is going to go off at certain times
Speaker:throughout the day.
Speaker:That will trigger you to remember to analyze if you're on
Speaker:task, whatever it is that you need to do to ensure
Speaker:that you're checking in on yourself throughout the day will be
Speaker:really helpful.
Speaker:And as you proceed forward,
Speaker:and as you start integrating this in and really consciously doing
Speaker:it, it starts to become natural.
Speaker:Every time you start to flip onto a different task,
Speaker:you'll see,
Speaker:you'll start catching yourself and saying,
Speaker:wait, should I be doing this or not?
Speaker:And if you should,
Speaker:then of course you carry on.
Speaker:And if not,
Speaker:you redirect yourself.
Speaker:This is the power of purpose.
Speaker:The very best thing about this power of purpose is it
Speaker:doesn't cost you anything to implement and you can today.
Speaker:So download by worksheet,
Speaker:cause that walks you through everything.
Speaker:Again, gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped.com forward slash one 43.
Speaker:Make sure to set up your business purpose and your product
Speaker:purpose. This is something that will be a guiding light overall.
Speaker:You'll do it once for your company.
Speaker:And then you'll get into the daily task purposes,
Speaker:the goals and the projects.
Speaker:And this is what you consciously work with to make sure
Speaker:it's in alignment as those big projects come throughout the year.
Speaker:And you want to say yes or no to them.
Speaker:And as those daily projects start,
Speaker:you get a little bit challenged and you naturally tried to
Speaker:pull yourself off course.
Speaker:You now know how to keep yourself on target.
Speaker:So the project gets done and you advance.
Speaker:I can promise you you'll see the same types of growth
Speaker:and activity and growth in Results.
Speaker:I mean revenue that I've been able to see this past
Speaker:year. So who's with me.
Speaker:Raise your hand.
Speaker:I would love to know if you're going to be implementing
Speaker:this and how it's working for you.
